explorer.exe application error

Ok, so I won't leave well enough alone....

I'd really like to get my computer back to the way it was

before I ran into this problem that everyone was so kind to

help out with:

I finally got rid of the inaccessible boot device by copying the

winnt/system32/drivers directory over into the old broken setup.

This fixed that problem and now I can boot into that old system

again :D

BUT, now I'm back to the same problem I first came here with...

The machine comes up and I get an error as it's loading up:

explorer.exe application error

unknown software exception (0xc06d007f) occured in the application at

location 0x77e87e08.

I tried copying over explorer.exe from the working install, but I still get the

same error. This also happens in safe mode. Any ideas??

do a search for explorer.exe and tell me how many you have and where they are

Here's what a search turned up:

AutostartExplorer c:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.0\Tools\Autostart Explorer

explorer c:\win2k (this is the new setup that boots correctly)

explorer c:\win2k\ServicePackFiles\i386

explorer c:\winnt (this is the one that's busted)

I did have another explorer.exe in c:\winnt\ServicePackFiles\i386

but I renamed that one last night while I was troubleshooting

and a reboot proved no change.

Oh, and I get the same error if I explicitly choose c:\winnt\explorer

from the task manager.

I'm checking through this list of things, but nothing's done the

trick yet....

I still think your system files are up the spout and that a system file checker is in order or a repair via the control panel.... but we've been down that path! :(

Yep. I keep feeling like I'm going in circles with this.

over from the working install to the broken one. I now get to the

Sorry, I lied. It's the mouse that doesn't work.

But even after I log in I still don't get the taskbar or icons.

I've replace the system32 and system folders with the working

login.

least get my old address book file for Outlook? I'm not sure where

it lives.
