Finally fixed Windows 2003 compatibility, so now again it works with XP, 2k and 2k3 but now I finally discovered what was wrong with the Home Edition...it's the Administrator account, somehow it remains named "Owner".

So if you want to use this version on XP-Home Edition then just have in mind to logon with "Owner" and not "Administrator".

That's it, if you find any other bug report it after you made sure it's caused by nLite. Have fun.

What's new in 0.99.3b

general:

driver integration moved after removal

translation template updated

license mode option (win2k3)

Keep Media Player compatibility option

Black setup background option

fixed: windows 2003 support

translations: Deutsch,French,Italian,Japanese,Korean,Nederlands, Norwegian,Portuguese,Romanian,Russian,Simplified Chinese, Spanish,Vietnamese and Polish. components:

DNS Client

DHCP Client

System Monitor

TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper

fixed: 16bit Support

fixed: Sound Controllers (USB audio)

fixed: Performance Logs and alerts

Yes, I found a thread which lead to the thread in PCA - by sheer coincidence I had run across "Strewth!" in an article on MAX PC not half an hour previous, that's what prompted me to post the question here as I thought you might be able to point me in the direction of some sites where I might glean sufficient knowledge to be able, eventually, to do what Mr. Flecchia has done. That is how I envisage my ideal machine, the speed part is not of great importance, but wow, that must be one seriously efficient, stable computer.

Ah well, it's going to take a long time to read through 500 plus postings so, the sooner I start and all that. No doubt, there will be quite a bit of irrelevant dross from those who worship bloated systems and wish to vent their spleen on anyone who wishes to think differently. Do you know if he used something similar to nLite to create the foundation for his work or did he start from scratch? I'm glad, now, that I kept my '98SE disc, I may be using it sometime in the not too distant future.

Three pages in and, already, my head hurts. The man has it well sussed hasn't he? Reading the thread gave me an idea - to see if I could do to PhotoS. what nLite did to my XP so I've un-installed PhotoS. 7.0 and installed version 6.0 and am, at present, stripping out files to see whether, or not, I can cut it down to the app. that I require (there is so much of that programme that I have never and probably never will utilise). So far, the only problem I've had has been a warning that it couldn't open as the fonts were missing - soon put right. It's going to take some time to do that and read Mr. Flecchia's thread at the same time.

If I do manage to get reasonably close to what I would like with the app. do you think I shall need to edit the registry to account for the missing files? That could be my stumbling block, I'll see how it goes but, so far so good. Ah well...back to work!

As far as I know Tony started by deleting files and then he would see if the deletion of these files caused any problem. If successful he would take an image [using an application called Drive Image [2002 I think]]. Then he would delete more files and then would see if it worked. If there were any problems he would restore the image and start again. He would then continue, deleting, see if worked, taking an image. He would then repeat.

So all he used was the delete key, Drive Image and time.

Yup.

Ummm I'd leave it. You could use a reg scrubber application?

If you want to do this you'll have a spare machine as it will require an install of 98 or XP. You could dual boot but risk something going wrong.

Or if you want to be fancy you could invest in some software which will allow you to do whatever you want errr within windows.

I use VMWARE :-> http://www.vmware.com/products/desktop/ws_features.html

You could do a strewth to an extent but not 100%.

Strewth would be tailor made to your system [not vmware] and only your system.

errr make sense?

"errr make sense?"

Yes it does. I'm beginning to pick up the gist of it on the other thread and your suggestion of another computer on which to do it is something I was considering - I was going to ask you whether, or not, you might think it more advisable than doing it to my present system.

As I said, I still have my 98 disc and a copy of 98lite (I thought I might start with that as a foundation and then start stripping from there) so all I need now is another tower - I was going to get one and load it with Linux but your previous thread introduced me to nLite (I'm going to use that again but I'm waiting for a non β version as I used the version between0.99 and the latest one to make another disc - not happy with it, thank goodness for Acronis True Image, no harm done) so goodbye Linux, the disc has been sitting on my desk here for several weeks now. Regardless I shan't be doing anything until I am absolutely satisfied that I'm comfortable with what I'm doing.

I've gone as far as I dare with Photoshop now: 26Mb and still working but I haven't tested everything yet, I would imagine it will take me several days to do that and I envisage going back up to about 30-40Mb. I thought I would take a range of images i.e. scanner, reflective and pos/neg and digital camera images, process them in the "new" Photoshop and then view them in Paint Shop Pro before printing them and then, if all is OK and to my satisfaction I shall un-install 6.0 replace 7.0 and start all over again. If you wish I can post here in a few days or a week to let you know how I get on with it all - triumph or disaster.

Well another base would be great but 98lite [and your deleting of files] along with nLite [for xp] when a non Beta is available would only be effective on that base and not your main system. Unless you bought the same components then the two systems would be different [well give or take].

So unless you plan to run your version of your tailored Windows on the new base you'll have to start again on your main system. Graphics drivers etc would have to be "stripped" by you again.

Common files the like of applications you use should be the same to delete what you've deleted now.

I think time consuming is an important factor and trial and error is a must.

However you'll find 98 and XP to be different, all different. 98 probably less more complicated and easier than XP. But all the same I think it would take some time to acheive what you want.

Just an update.

The "stripping" of PS 6.0 was a success, I got it down to 30Mb without loosing any of the functions I use regularly, PS 7.0, on the other hand was more difficult. It was functional at 55Mb but I lost a couple of capabilities which are fairly important to me, I finally settled on 80+Mb which is basically just removing Image Ready - the component parts of version 7.0 appear to be more inter-dependant upon each other than v.6.0.

I've also been messing with The Gimp and I've finally got it to run in a stable fashion, no more crashes now. I've been trying to figure it out for 13 months or so and, not knowing anything about programing, I was at a bit of a disadvantage but I finally figured out how to do it without coding. It was necessary to do the opposite to Gimp - I had to add 21Mb to it, rather a heavy handed solution to the problem but I like Gimp very much and it's the only way I can continue to use it - I was having to re-install over the top every other time I used it laterly.

Off now to take a few more bits out of XP. I.E. is gone now, as well as WMP and a few other items - don't let anyone tell you that Windows will not function without I.E.. quite the opposite, in fact. You do lose a few minor functions (well they're minor to me...don't know about anyone else) but the overall gain over-rides any considerations you may have for Webview.

I'm off now to see if I can wheedle some info out of the VM people's tech support. Cheers.
