Guest The Ghost of Inept Pig Posted March 27, 2003 Report Share Posted March 27, 2003 There's a Top Ten Dying Game Genres list over a Gamespy.com, which lists the game genres that are no longer being pampered to by software companies.In case you don't want to go through the hardship of clicking the link, the top ten is as follows:10. Space Shooter or "Shmups" - Like the classic R-type (the final outing of which will be on the Playstation2 at somepoint), Project-X (a fancy looking Amiga game that would cheat you so often) and to a lesser extent Asteroids - all good clean fun, with super weapons of mass destruction (and to hark back to days gone by 3 lives, no way of saving your progress and a limited amount of continues...)9. Puzzle - the type of game that are normally now found as free/shareware, like Tetris and it's many clones.8. Light gun - Only ever had Time Crisis on my PsOne, seemed far too short and the gun wasn't that impressive either (and I kept missing - but that was down to the games configuration, right?), other such games includes Segas House of the Dead series ( and the really old NES Duck Hunt)7. Text Adventure - I'm not surprised and not really sad to see these as a dying genre, the amount of time I used to spend looking for the right 'phrase' to make my character do as I wanted - sheer frustration.6. Maze - Such as Pac-Man, enough said.5. Virtual Reality - I remember seeing this stuff on 'Bad Influence' on ITV, I look stupid enough without one of those VR helmets on, so I cannot comment anymore.4. Educational - Examples: Oregon Trail, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, Reader Rabbit - apparently, yet another genre of gaming that I managed to bypass (aren't I the lucky one?)3. Full Motion Video - Mad Dog McCree, Night Trap, some others - never really appealed to my young gaming palette.2. Beat 'Em Up - Like Streets of Rage (Woo!), and Double Dragon (Yay!), and to go really retro Renegade on the Amstrad (Houpla!), It's sad that these games should be mentioned on the same list as Text adventures, I actually think these were quite good - I wish I'd kept my friends Mega Drive (I couldn't afford one) as I quite fancy a game of Streets of Rage right now...1. Graphic Adventure - Noooooooooo - I love this genre, how can it be said to be dying, it's great - Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, Broken Sword, even Grim Fandango - all classy games, actually I was moaning to Dan (It's a past time I enjoy immensely) about the fact that I wanted a new one- it's been such a long time since the last Monkey Island game....That’s not exactly what the list on Gamespy says, for theirs is much nicer and has pretty pictures…I’m off to sulk over the fact that two perfectly good genres are (according to Gamespy) dying… Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Used to keep me awake for all kinds of hours!Grim Fandango aswell, another good game, brilliant story, excellent animation and voice acting, just didnt like the cursor controls, would have prefered the old point and click!Actually im gonna dig out a few of the monkey island games out in the morning!
