Access control

Hi

I have problems with folder deleting and moving it.

I have to set users permission so they can NOT delete folders and move them to any other location. With files within these folder and subfolders they can do everything they want.

I was able to deny deleting and moving of folders, but it came to one side affect – they can not rename created folder!

How can set these permission entries? In short: users can do with files anything, but folder they must not delete or move!

Can anyone help me!!

Thanks

Denis

Are you using Active Directory, or simple file sharing?

If you're using simple file sharing, just right click the folder, and add the Modify Permission on the Security Tab for the users concerned. They'll be able to do anything they want inside the folder, but cannot rename or delete the parent folder.

If you're using Active Directory to control access via Security Groups, just allow the Security Group Modify Permission as above.

If i use modify permission then they can delete folders and move them!!!

Once again: what users can do (have permission): to do with files what they want., create/rename folders

what users can't do (they should not have this permission): to delete or move folders - this one is hard to implement.

And one more thing: CREATOR OWNER permission is not available (removed) - because the owner of the folder will still be able to move it to a complete other location

so basically you will allow the users to add a folder, but they shouldn't be allowed to remove / rename that same folder?

this will give you a hard time setting up in Windows, perhaps you might need an external tool to do this.

In linux this is possible without a problem, but Windows isn't that powerful when it comes to networking (yet).

i'm sure i piss a lot of people off with this statement, but it simply is the truth, Microsoft became active in Networking from after Windows 98, while linux is network based from the time that it existed...

No offense taken Lepricaun. Microsoft was a desktop OS later adapted to networking. Unix is a networking OS that can be used on desktops.

I agree with Lepricaun. I don't know of a way to allow someone to create a folder, but not let the user later delete or change it in Windows. Maybe it's time for a RedHat Server, and some help from Lepricaun?

I thought I saw a response from Belatucadrus, or Boris (one of those 'B' guys) :) recommending AESoftware's System Security 2002. I downloaded it and didn't see that it specifically lets you do what you wanted, but it looks like it could be useful for more granular control of who can do what.

Sincerely,
