Windows update causes runtime error in line 71

Hi,

When I go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com I get a dialog box saying "A runtime error has occurred, do you wish to debug? Line 71 Error: Automation server can't create object". I'm running IE 6.0.2800.1106 on Windows 2000 Pro. with service pack 4.

If I click yes to debug, Microsoft Script Editor is launched and points to this line:

oXMLHTTP = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");

If I click no I just get a blank page in IE. Anyone know what's up?

This is a bit of a shot in the dark because I'm not sure what the error message means but do you have your security set to not accept activeX?

Try deleting all your Temp files in Internet Explorer and refresh the page.

Security settings are at the default level. I tried changing to low but got the same problem. Also tried deleting cookies, temp. files & clearing history but still no joy.

in IE

go to tools>internet options>advanced tab

Now tick the 2 boxes that say disable script debugging

Hi,

I could only see one option that said disable script debugging. I ticked it and tried again but this time I get a blank page with no error. In the bottom left corner is a yellow exclamation icon. If I double-click this I see the error message again.

you should have 2 there, one saying disable IE script bugging and one saying other

Did you close all IE windows and restart comp after doing that?
