Daphne
Troubleshooting some display events on my PC (already solved), one of my tries was to downgrade from DirectX 9, installed with XP SP2, to DX 8.1 with this tool:http://www.3dcenter.org/downloads/directx-dx9uninstaller.phpAfter I knew that this wasn't the problem, I wanted to reinstall directx9.0c. The installer uncompressed its files, but executing setup.exe I got instantaneously a message telling me "the installed files are ready to use". However, I checked with System Info that the DirectX version was still 8.01. In fact, the 9.0c did not install. 8.01 works fine, but if this happens now at any attempt to upgrade to 9.0c, I fear I could never upgrade anymore to any newer version. Maybe somebody can help me. I thank for any advice on this. :flowers:
Scarecrow Man
Try removing it again. This time, to remove DirectX Do the following:Start > Run > regeditBrowse to and remove the following keyHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectXThen try reinstalling again. Daphne
Thanx Scarecrow. But it doesnt work. However, it accepted to let install 9.0b. Thats something, at least. This lets me think it has to do especifically with the 9.0c setup file and some hidden setting or info somewhere in the windows folder. I really hesitate to fully remove DirectX because its suppossed to be interwoven with WinXP. Most tools only downgrade the existing version... Cpt James T. Kirk
i think scarecrows right, to fix the problem youll have to remove directx first then install the 9c version. just have the 9c version dl/d'd to someplace, a cd, a 3.5 disk the desktop, wherever, then remove the old one and do as scarcrow said. then install the 9c. Daphne
Thanx Cpt. Kirk. But, I don't know a mean to uninstall DirectX completely. That tool only performs a downgrade. If any of you knows an alternative Uninstaller, please tell me. MOst other DirectX Uninstallers are suited only for Win versions other than XP. :(

Do not delete any folders, as they are an integrated part of the operating system.Try the instructions I have given above again, reboot, and install the latest version. You can get it from http://www.microsoft.com/directx/
Daphne
Thanx again, ScarecrowMan. But, believe me, I tried it three times before I got it with the 9.0b version. Always after backing-up and deleting that key, two times in Safe Mode, once normal. The last time, in safe mode, I got to install that older version, deleted again the key and tried with 9.0c.
