To define a paper size in WinXP

Hi all,

Should we be able to define an exact paper size in WinXP then I can further use it in Seagate Crystal report? I've tried to find out such kind of thing but I can't find this out. Does anyone have any other suggestions to this?

I think - but I am not sure - that allowed paper sizes are defined by the printer and its drivers.

If I open Word (as an example; I don't know Seagate Crystal reports) and check Page Setup, I can see a list of paper sizes for each printer. But I can also define a Custom size. But if I do that, the printer may not be able to handle it, because it doesn't have that paper.

I am really not an expert on this; hopefully someone else here has some additional input on your question.

Crystal Reports is its own beast as far as printing, I think. A printer does have to be set up in Windows for Crystal Reports to use it, but if I remember right, you have to further define printer charicteristics in Crystal Reports?

Are you trying to print to a custom paper size, or just trying to change border sizes or something?

Just for my XP Windows, I can't find out the custom paper size to define an arbitrary one and I remember that in the previous versions of Windows, we can define something like this.

Do you think that the printer drivers decide this or not?

Morning Huamin, When you say Win XP, this is an operating system and as far as I know there are no settings for your page options to the printer. Do you have an Office program, or word processor on your PC? This is where you would normally access the options to choose paper type and size.

Its also true that your printer driver may offer options for many paper settings, size>type>weight>envelopes>labels, both my printers have this function. If you have been using your printer with Win 98se or similar and now up-graded to Win XP then the drivers you have will be out of date and XP is using its basic drivers to make your printer work. You will need the latest specific drivers to your printer to regain access to these features.

For instance, I had ever tried to download the corr. driver from 'Epson' website but now I just can't update the corr. driver (shown in the document) for that printer - 'Epson LQ570' using the driver I got.

I've tried to attach with a document for making the things clearer but there is a failure to do this.

Attaching a document can sometimes be tricky. Try this (I am doing this right now step-by-step)

• Click on the Browse button below the editing window
  
• Select the document you want to attach
  
• Click on the Add This Attachment button
  

I think that's all; I will see it in a moment.

You can optionally add the document into your post, e.g. a picture. But I don't think it's necessary for a text document.

Huamin, I've just downloaded the manual for the printer Epson LQ-570 dot matrix printer. Is this the one? You won't be able to upload the document as it is over 6.4 Mb in size. :(

I have the full manual on my screen though, so if you can point me to which section of the 6 part PDF document to open, [several hundred pages] I will try to help. I also checked the website for XP driver downloads and it says there are none available for XP. Will you confirm you do actually have a XP driver for your printer please?

I previously just had downloaded the driver for 'Epson LQ-570' but its version is just for Windows 3.1(very old version). I do not have a driver for WinXP. I even think that proably if I used a powerful (newer) dot-matrix printer, (my colleague has no problem with such issue as he is with a more powerful printer), then I'll have no problems in Crystal report.

How about the manual you've got (or you can even send me that at ....

Hope the manual is of some help but without the correct XP drivers you will only have access to the basic drivers that XP operating system provides itself. Good luck and please let us know how you get on and if we can help further.

PS: Yes a newer printer that is compatible with XP and has the drivers for XP will give you access to all the functions of the printer that a word processing software won't.

But I have got an error (shown in the attachment) when setting up the printer such as Epson LQ-570e and it seems that the driver is just for Win98.

It doesn't look like an error to me; it just asks where file ESCP5C.DLL is located.

I just found that the Epson LQ-570 driver is actually part of Windows XP; see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;EN-US;q293378

You should be able to install that driver from the Device Manager. (You will have to unclick 'Show compatible hardware'.

Try to use Windows XP's own driver for the Epson LQ-570. Try these steps:

• Control Panel
  
• System
  
• tab Hardware
  
• Device Manager
  
• right-click on the printer in question, and select Update Driver
  
• select No, not this time [Next]
  
• select Install from a list or specific location [Next]
  
• select Don't search, I will choose the driver to install [Next]
  
• unclick Show compatible hardware
  
• select the manufacturer on the left pane, then the correct model on the right [Next]
  

That should install the Windows XP driver for your printer.

Or do you already have the correct Windows XP driver?

Hi pwillener, I think he has the correct windows driver already. XP will have found the printer on install and used its own basic driver. What Huamin wants is the specific driver to his printer so that he can access the various options offered by the correct driver. He mentions that the printer and driver he already has always worked for him in win 95 and 98se, this leads me to believe that its an older printer and up to date drivers for XP are not available, or at least if they are he can't find them.

There is another driver available on the Epson website http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support...latform=Windows - apparently for WinNT & Win9x. Can you try this one?

There is a newer driver available for the LQ-570e printer on the same site, but I wouldn't use it if it is not exactly that model that you have (this driver is for all known Windows systems, including XP; see http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support...latform=Windows).
