Clueless
I have an older computer running on windows 98 and I want to know how to totally wipe the hard drive clean. I want to reinstall windows and do it as minimally as possible. I know windows has some extra programs that it usually puts on even though I will never use them. I'd appreciate the help. Chris
Do you have the Windows 98 Installation Disks?
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
First, create a Win98 startup floppy. Then install the Batch98 utility from the Win98 CD-ROM, and run it.Next, edit the created BSETUP.INF file, and turn on or off facilities you want or don't want. Then copy the file onto the Win98 startup floppy. Finally boot your computer with the Win98 startup floppy, format the HD, and install Win98 with the following commandD:\setup.exe A:\bsetup.infD:\ above is the assumed CD-ROM drive. You can find additional info on the Batch utility on my very old Win95 web page at http://www2.gol.com/users/pbw/jkeyb.htm#w95_rein
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I think I was not very clear in my description above. When running Batch98, you can first analyze your current Win98 settings. Next you can change any options you want. And third, you save the settings to a file, e.g. BSETUP.INFYou can later edit that file with notepad, and add additional items (like display type and monitor type, to speed up the installation). But this is completely optional.Full documentation of the Batch98 tool is here.

ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
During setup you can select which parts of Win98 you wisk to install; Not completely. If you use the batch setup file method I described earlier, you have almost full control over your Win98 installation.
