  • Update for Windows XP
When you work in a program that loads both version 5 and version 6 of the Comctl32.dll file in Microsoft Windows XP, the program may stop responding and an access violation may occur in the Comctl32.dll file (2/25/2005).
  • Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Zoom Update
The third mode of zoom does not always work as expected when watching live or recorded TV. To enable zoom to work as expected, install the Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Zoom Update and also install the KB891220 update (2/28/2005).

  • Windows Installer 3.1
The Microsoft® Windows® Installer 3.1 is the application installation and configuration service for Windows and is available for Microsoft Windows 2000 SP3 and later, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows XP SP1, Microsoft Windows XP SP2, and Microsoft Windows Server 2003. The additional features in version 3.1 help make creating, distributing, and managing updates to applications easier and more efficient.

Now available via AutoUpdate or WindowsUpdate.

P.S. [added] it is rather curious that this update shows up in my Add/Remove Programs list as Windows Installer 3.1 RC1; it did not indicate to be a beta or release candidate - not from AutoUpdate, nor from WindowsUpdate.

The exact version number (C:\WINDOWS\system32\msi.dll) is 3.1.4000.1427.

There is also a new file C:\WINDOWS\MSI31-RC1.log

It appears that the installation of Windows Installer 3.1 RC1 is due to having WindowsUpdate v6 Beta on my system. So the "announcement" above is not for the common Windows user. Sorry for that.

  • Update for Windows XP (KB886716)
When you try to convert your video production in Adobe Premiere Pro to a Moving Pictures Experts Group 2 (MPEG-2) format, the .mp2 file is not converted, and either Adobe Premiere Pro or your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer may stop responding (3/25/2005).

  • Windows Messenger 5.1
Microsoft Windows Messenger allows real-time communication with other contacts who use Windows Messenger and who are signed in to the same instant messaging service. Windows Messenger is the instant messaging client of choice for businesses in managed environments (3/24/2005).

An updated version of the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830) is available from WindowsUpdate for Windows 2000, XP, and 2003 Server.

Details

Additional Information

I found conflicting information about how this tool is run. It is implied that the tool runs itself during "installation" (there is no actual installation), and the result can be found in the %windir%\Debug\Mrt.log file. I didn't find that log file on my system.

To explicitly run the tool, run

mrt

with or without command line switches documented in the details link above.

Sometimes there are some semi-interesting downloads from Microsoft, but not always warranting to open a new thread. But perhaps adding info to an existing one, like this...

  • Microsoft Video Screensaver
Microsoft Video Screensaver includes sample movie footage that gives you a view of countries all over the world (7/20/2005).

Although this tool is intended for IT professionals, experienced Windows users can easily use it to check their system(s) for security risks. Great improvements over the previous 1.2.1 release.

More information.
