How to edit very large text files?

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to edit a large TXT file (about 150MB). Notepad can't open it, and Word (2003) took about an hour of 99% CPU usage, and an average of 100MB of memory, before I canceled it.

I have circumvented it for now by uploading it to an z/OS system (converting it to EBCDIC), and edit it with the ISPF editor.

But that upload, download, and converting it back to ASCII also took well over an hour each way, so that is not something I want to do again.

Anyone knows a Windows text editor that can cope with very large files?

P.S. I have 2GB of memory, so that shouldn't have been a problem for Word. I also closed all non-essential processes and services before that attempt to open that file.
