Problem With WINS

Our company has a workgroup setup. We have a WIn 2k Server, which acts as a WINS Server for the time being. We also have a Router. On 1 int fa of the Router we have connected the entier comapny's computer with an IP on 192.169.0.--- & on the other int fa of the router we have connected a single computer with an ip of 192.168.1.155. All the PC's connected to the WINS server can connect to the PC with the ip of 192.168.1.115 but that pc can only connect to 2 PC's with the ip 12.168.0.---. In the future we want to segment r company's computer setup, that is why this is just a test phase.

Cyrus.

Do you mean 192.168.0.? 192.169.0.0 would take you into valid Internet addresses and could cause you problems.

What kind of router? Why do you have devices on separate subnets? Are you trying to create a DMZ?

Can you provide IP Addresses and subnet masks for all interfaces on the router? If you're not comfortable posting this information, please PM me. Also, what kind of Internet connection do you have?

WINS is a broadcast oriented protocol. It is recommended to have a WINS Server on each subnet that will have legacy PC's that have to resolve names via WINS. Putting it on its own subnet defeats your purpose, since you'll have to allow WINS broadcasts between subnets for this to work. I recommend having the WINS Server on the same subnet as the PC's that have to resolve names.

See WINS in a Routed Environment in this Microsoft Article for an overview.
