kidd6488 Posted June 27, 2005 Report Share Posted June 27, 2005 Hi, I've got a scrapped 80G hard drive that I'm trying to format and stuff so I can put XP on it. But, In windows 2000 computer management, it's got this 31 MB FAT (EISA Configuration) Partition that I cannot get rid of. -pops- Posted June 27, 2005 Report Share Posted June 27, 2005 I would be very wary of putting my operating system on a drive which you describe as being "scrapped". This indicates to me that there is something wrong with it (why scrap it otherwise?) and is in some way unreliable. Even if it is apparently good, the fact it is secondhand would put doubts in my mind about its longevity.Considering you can buy a new 80GB Maxtor drive for less than £35 and a 120GB for less than £45, trying to get a secondhand scrap drive to function hardly seems worthwhile.In answer to your specific question, 30MB in a 80GB drive is a very tiny amount and, if you can format the main part of the drive the way you want it, it may be best just to forget about that little bit.Alternatively, you could go the drive manufacturer's website and download their software to restore the drive to factory condition (fills it with "0"). I think in the case of Maxtor it is called Maxblast but all drive makers have their own particular one - don't use another manufacturers software. I know 30 M / 80 G is nothing, its just the fact that it is there... What is this EISA stuff? I've never heard of it...It seems like every time I post to any technical forum theres always people who are just willing to tell people to deal with it, or go a different route instead of actually adressing the problem and helping to fix it. Seems like there should be more people trying to help people as opposed to just getting topics replied to and getting people shut up......... If I wanted that 31MB on there, I wouldn't need to come to a forum to get someone's advice to tell me that....I'm also trying to get DHCP server running on a SuSE Linux box, and all I can get from those people is, oh, just set everything static (like that's convenient) or ohh, just go get a D-Link router... No! I installed Linux to serve these functions, and it wasn't working correctly...
