MSN9 stored mails

Recommended Posts

Hi. Couple days ago, I was befuddled by the sudden loss of hard drive space when in fact, I haven't done anything new to my computer (no installation, etc.). I lost about .5 gig of space in just 2 days or so. After searching around Google for awhile, I realized that MSN9 automatically saves emails in C:/Documents and Settings/Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/MSN/db/Mail of my computer. Is it safe to delete files in this folder, and if so, which ones? I see couple different file extensions and I don't want to mess things up by accidently deleting important files. And if I do delete these files, will it have any detrimental effect on my computer or MSN9?

The reason why I ask this is that my hard drive is nearly full and the stored emails are taking a heavy toll on my space. I have over 11 gigs of stored emails! So far, Google hasn't helped me in finding answers to my questions.

Also, is there a way to prevent MSN from storing emails onto my computer? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance!

I cannot give you any advice on MSN, but to quicly clear up wasted disk space, download, install, and run CCleaner - you will be surprised how much disk space you get back.

Make sure that you look at the configuration options before you run the cleaner; there are things you may want to keep - cookies, or certain settings.

Much appreciative for your reply pwillener. I do use CCleaner from time to time, but it doesn't erase the stored emails that I was talking about. Thanks for your suggestion however.

Anyways, I just went on to erase the files under the ....\MSN\db\mail save for a few files such as index, metadata, index.new, and export (any files that sounded important to keep :D ). I was able to save 11 gigs of space without having any problems (at least so far). I must warn to those who have a similar problem that if they plan to do the same, they should NOT delete the files located under ...\MSN\db. I deleted them into my recycle bin and when I tried to view my mails on MSN, all my current mails received were completely blank. Good thing I restored them back.

I sure wish there's a way to stop the automatic storing of emails onto my computer. But that's just me complaining. Thanks again, and by the way, nice forum :D!
