profile renaming after every login

I'm having a problem with my machines. I have a 2000 advance server for my domain and windows 2000 and xp sp2 machines for clients. My roaming profiles work fine under 2000 but under xp sp2 they get renamed every time I log in.

so first time I login my path is

c:\documents and settings\scinerd

log out and back in my path is

c:\documents and settings\scinerd.domain

log and back in my path is

c:\documents and settings\scinerd.domain000

The user's don't have write permission on the box but I do so I don't think it's a permission problem. If I log on as a different account and wipe out the 0kb directories under document and settings I start over with scinerd.
