m2001smith
My Cd drive and dvd drive were working fine ...Suddenly, I lost the dive letter for both. Yet the bios sees them and device manager sees them and reporting them working.I am running windows 2000. I know both drives are fine since when I boot with a DOS diskette, they both can read a CD ...Any clues?
Scarecrow Man
BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST. If you don't know how, ask before you do this.Open up registry editor and navigate to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\Find the key with DVD/CD-ROM drives in it, and delete any keys named 'upperfilters' or 'lowerfilters'

Scarecrow Man
Your welcome.Basically what is happening, is a piece of software has installed a filter for your CD-ROM and this program has since been removed or changed and the filters are now invalid.Have you removed any software recently?also see here for more info:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q270008 - 2Khttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q314060 - XP
