The Hero Prince
My flat mate Graham Marsh once had a laptop. One of his flat mates called Gwen spilt a cup of tea onto the laptop and it died... or so we thought...A couple of days ago I got the corpse of Graham's laptop out of the closet and onto the workbenchttp://forums.neoplanet.co.uk/index.php?showforum=27 :o I was surprised enough to see it turn on at all but when the only error I encountered on starting her up was overcome by simply pressing the F1 key I was overjoyed!! As windows loaded up I began to see that things were not quite to be trusted just as of yet... Although the background was dazzling, the text upon closer inspection turned out to be in Italian... :wallbash: Error messages were coming in now, from every direction... Sound error :groupwave: Network error :vibrate: USB FailureThe computer froze and I thought it was the end........When I started the Laptop up again (after I'd left it to cool down for a while). I was again confronted by the RTC error. I read what it said **** Bad RTC battery ******** Bad Checksum (CMOS) ****Check system, then press [F1] keyI noticed in the bios that all the settings had been reset to their defaults obviously this confirmed my suspisions that the RTC battery was the battery which powered the CMOS. Loading up for a second time I found all the same errors but the system didn't freeze.. I knew my way around XP well enough to navigate in Italian. On inspection of the sytem I began to suspect that all of the problems might just be driver issues. ..After a format and fresh install of English Windows I found that all of the driver issues had been solved. During my installation however I encountered problems again. During the first attempt the machine handled the format but froze during the initial stages of the install. I raised the laptop onto raised mounts to at least give it a bit of breathing room as the Fan was making a fair amount of noise not to mention the boiling hot air coming out of the exhaust vent (it kept on slowing down and stopping for times). It was only after I had finished the install and was just setting up all my software and games that Irealised that these freezes were happening at sporatic moments. I got on the web and looked up the error on the internet: http://www.expansys.com/forumthread.asp?code=SP6100&thread=4So people have been having trouble with this know issue...I dunno, what da ya think? ...Whats your view?...Wha' would ya suspect?...Wha' would ya sugest?thanksLove Frank
nellie2
Well you could try changing the battery... but it looks like it could well be an issue with the connection on the motherboard. Although how you would re-inforce the joint is a bit beyond me. I'm quite happy rummaging around the innards of a desktop PC.. but have never ventured inside a laptop.
