Cannot access configuration on 192.168.0.1

I have installed the above router, with an Ethernet cable, on my XP PC and the adapter on a 98SE PC and had everything running ok. I changed the user name and password on the XP PC via the configuration settings and it was all working ok until this morning. I then tried to access the configuration settings to activate the security and all I get is a box with the user name and password in plus the tick in save password, when I click on OK the password line becomes empty and it freezes the window, I have to use Ctrl/Alt/Del to get out of it. On advice I have waited a while in case there is a time out function stopping me but it still refuses to connect to the configuration page.

I can use the internet on both machines and there are no problems, but, I am concerned that the security is disabled.

If I reset the router via the small hole as per the manual will it solve this problem, if not how do I go about removing everything connected with the installation and start again?

Using the reset button should clear the password and make it the default for your model router which is Admin with a blank password, I believe, but I'll verify. You shouldn't notice that it's been reset unless you changed any settings from their default values. If you have changed settings, try to remember what they were and to be prepared to re-enter them after resetting.

[edit]According to this: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/N100651.asp Password reset procedure, the default username is admin, and the default password is password

To get to the configuration page I type 192.168.0.1 which was working ok but now it does not work, as I said it just opens the username password box which won't open by pressing OK.

I'm aware of the reset option, but I don't know if it will solve the problem of getting to the settings page, I think it will be quicker and easier to uninstall everything and start again, so, how do I do this?

In add/remove progs I have:

Intel® PRO Network adapters and drivers

Intel® PROSet for wired networks.

So I presume I delete these first then go to Control Panel /Network Connections and delete the entries there.

I am just concerned that there may be some entries in the registry that need to be removed, and I don't know which, if any, they may be.

homecomputeraid, just read your link, re setting the router does remove all changed settings, so thats ok. Just need confirmation re the 2 Intel entries in Control Panel.

Hello sapins, I have used the reset on a number of occasions. I have also gone back to the original installation CD and started again. I have never touched the add/remove progs, nor have I any settings in Control Panel /Network Connections. All my settings have been done via the Netgear wizard.

To reset, push a strong pin or paper clip (I used a propelling pencil) in the reset button hole and hold for 30 secs. That's not easy. Then switch off the power, still holding the pin in the reset hole for a further 10 secs. It ain't easy to juggle..!! Reconnect the power and away you go. Good luck. :)

Well, back to square one, tried to re-set, didn't work.

Sapins, are you saying that resetting the router did not reset the password to Factory Defaults? If so, I'd be calling Netgear about a defective router.

Have you been trying to connect via a cabled connection, or using wireless? (It shouldn't make any difference, I'm just curious).

Did you remove and re-install your network card? I prefer to do that through Device Manager by removing the hardware myself.

Second time lucky. After re-setting router you have to power down the router AND the computer.

I have now set up the security and changed the password, plus I have saved the settings.

Many thanks for your help guy's I can now relax and enjoy Sunderland beating Chelsea 2-1.

By the way D4\/!d you don't have to hold the re-set button in for 10 seconds after you power it down, Netgear help says this, I just waited the 30 seconds with the button held in, removed the paper clip and then I pulled out the power lead.
