COM port is missing

Greetings all.

I was trying to install a GSM/GPRS modem on a serial port and I can't communicate with it through any COM port. So, I went to the Device Manager and expanded Ports (COM &LPT) group. I had ports 1 through 13 showing up except COM2 port. Ports COM3 through COM13 showed up as "Bluetooth Communications Port (COMX)", where X is the corresponding port number between 3 and 13.

After that I installed my modem's driver and configured it to work on COM10 (I picked it randomly since I didn't know what COM port my serial port was mapped to), but I was not able to issue any AT commands to it through HyperTerminal (hypertrm) program. So, I figure that Bluetooth driver, which for some reasons was configured on all ports was intercepting requests to my modem.

I didn't know what COM port my serial port was mapped to, so this where I made my first mistake. I selected COM10 and uninstalled it. I rebooted the system, but COM10 is not showing up anymore.

So, my first question is how to get my port COM10 back? Is there a way to install it?

My second question is how to determing which COM port is mapped to my serial port?

Any help will be appreciated.

You should be able to see the basic COM ports in the BIOS and the relevent mapping which can be altered.

Install new hardware option of the device manager May help you over come your problem.

I entered BIOS setup mode when rebooting the system, but wasn't able to find the section for the COM port settings. I am using ASUS motherboard. Any hints?

What is the new hardware component in Device Manager and how do I install it? I am using Windows 2000 and I have SP 4 installed.

I do not know any of the ASUS motherboards but the 'On-board' COM ports should be on a BIOS page headed 'Integrated Peripherals' or something Simula.

Silly me I assumed you were using Win 98 or XP.

However I believe that the control Panel is the same on all windows systems:-

If you go into the control panel there should be an option 'Add New Hardware' This will allow you to scan for the COM ports automatically or manually and re-install them as required.

onboard com ports usually named and used as COM1 and COM2 and can be configured in bios setup at integrated peripherials as described before

if you want to still install com10 you can use add hardware section in control panel and select last sectionat list : add new hardware
