deuces wild Posted January 24, 2006 Report Share Posted January 24, 2006 I am posting a problem my daughter is running into with her wireless internet: My daughter shares a 4 bedroom apartment with 3 other girls at the Ohio State University. Their unit is in a building holding some 10 other units. All units are on wireless internet service through a local cable supplier. She had the same service (in a different apartment) last year with the same computer with no problems. This year she is experiencing constant drops in her wireless service. The signal strength shows as being strong but the signal drops every 20 minutes or so. None of her room mates experience this problem. She has a 3 year old PC desktop, her room mates have PC laptops, all with USB wireless modems. Her PC is no more than 20 feet from the main router/modem. We visited her over the weekend and gave her a new external hard drive that connects via USB. When the hard drive is connected and powered (it has a 110 v power connection) neither a USB quickdrive I have or her USB modem would run. Both would run individually, however, if the external HD was disconnected. I have purchased a 110 v powered USB hub for her hoping this will solve the problem by plugging the wireless modem and external HD into it. Is this a logical solution? Is it also possible her computer's internal power supply is going bad or are there other problems she could be having? deuces wild Posted January 24, 2006 Author Report Share Posted January 24, 2006 Yes, with no problems with the same set up last year in the same building. I should further explain: The ISP never really set them up properly at the beginning of the year and they were stealing signals unintentionally from their neighbors. When a weak signal occured, the signal would drop and pick up another neighbors. This was fixed, or so my daughter said a few weeks ago. It was fine for her for a while but is now a constant problem...........dropping the signal. None of her room mates on laptops have the same problem. Apparently there is a wireless phone being used by the students in the apartment adjacent to her bedroom. The tech she spoke with on Tuesday identified the problem and had her switch her wireless card to a different frequency.......that seems to have solved the problem.
