Wireless Dial-up

OK. I have a dial-up connection, and I have it shared to two NIC's via ICS, and a Network Bridge.

I have purchased a Wireless router, and I am trying to hook it up to my network.

I plug a cross-over from my LAN (IP address 192.168.0.1) into the WAN port of the Router. The router has DHCP disabled. The WAN port of the router gets an IP addresses of 192.168.0.60 assigned by DHCP on my "server" (computer with the modem and ICS)

BUT

the router will not give IP addresses to connected computers, or wireless computers.

I've read that it is possible, using ICS and making the router act as an Access Point rather than a router.

I am using a D-Link router.

Any ideas/suggestions or info would be appreciated.

I suggest turning off Internet Connection Sharing, turning DHCP on on your router, and using it to route.

[edit]Sorry ScarecrowMan, I missed the dial-up part. Are you saying you have a modem which dials your Internet connection, and two NIC's in one computer with ICS turned on? What is your goal with the router? To connect to it using a wireless NIC on another PC, then get to the Internet through your ICS computer?

I think you might want to just use a switch port on the router and leave DHCP turned off on both its inside and outside interfaces if I understand you right. You would just be using the wireless and switching functionality of the wireless router. Please post or PM if I still don't have it straight.

No offence, but wireless dial up is going to leave you waiting years for pages to open

I understand that you have a problem setting up the connection, but all this hassle may be for nothing if you do not understand that the connection will be even slower than on the computer that will help you transmit the wireless system. :D

I know its not a solution but i am just letting you know - broadband is cheap

I have a modem which dials the internet connection and two NIC's (bridged) in the Desktop PC. This PC is acting as a server right now, and the ICS works just fine if I use a crossover cable to the laptops.

My goal with the router is to set it up to "forward" the IP addresses it recieves from the PC. Currently I can either enable DHCP on the router, which assigns IP address to the computers, but does not give internet/network connectivity. I can turn off DHCP on the router, which then does not assign ANY IP address to the computers.

I want the router to act as a "Wireless Switch" so it will get a pool of IP addresses from the PC, and forward them to anything connected to it, wired or wireless.

Does that help?

P.S. It's a D-Link DI-524 http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=316

I also know of one other way to do this, an "Ad-Hoc" network.. where I use ICS via a Wireless NIC in the PC, but I'd rather do it with the router, since I have already purchased it. That way I should also have wired functionality if I need it.. correct?

I have it working now and am posting via Wireless...

What I did was disable DHCP on the router. I then connected a crossover to LAN port 1 of the router, configured my LAN to use my Desktop (connected to the internet via dial-up) as the DNS server, and removed the cable.

It is now working, slowly, but working! It is exactly as I expected. Speeds are not amazing, but then again it wasn't via the crossover to begin with...

Guide:

Basically you are setting up the Wireless router as a "second" router, because the host computer, connected via dial-up is acting as a router. Therefore, follow the guide for setting up the router as an Access Point / Switch.

Use router as Access Point / Switch

It is STRONGLY recommended that you do not use 2 routers. You may want to return it and purchase an access point (wireless) or a hub/switch.

To use your router as an access point only, please follow the steps below:

Router A is the router you want to use as the router - connected to the modem. (Or a PC connected to dial-up in this case)

Router B is the router you want to use an access point or switch. A Straight through or Cross-over cable will work.

Step 1 Do not use the WAN port on router B. Use one of the LAN ports. Any port should work. In this case, Port 1 was used.

Step 2 Set up the PC's NIC to use a static IP address of 192.168.0.1. A differen't address can be used, but for the purpse of this guide, we will be using 192.168.0.1.

Step 3 Set up ICS, using the Wizard provided in Windows XP, or manually. If done manually, make sure to share your dial-up connection with the NIC connected to your router. Make sure the NIC has a static IP address of 192.168.0.1.

Step 3 Disable DHCP on router B. For D-Link routers, go into the routers configuration > Home > DHCP. Click Disable and then click apply.

Connect to the network via the Wireless Network Connection utility in Windows.

To connect to the router to use it as a wired router, a static IP address must be used (example: 192.168.0.xxx. The xxx may be replaced with any number between 2 and 255. 1 cannot be used as it is used for the NIC of the routing PC). 192.168.0.1 (or the IP of the NIC connected to the router) must be used as the default gateway, and DNS in order to get internet connectivity.
