Discusman
I'm using a DI-604 router and I have several desktops, laptops and a server connected to the network.Last night I replace the router by using another one which is the same model "D-Link DI-604". And I found all my computer's private IP has changed. It used to be 192.168.0.105 and now it changed to 192.168.15.105The default gateway IP used to be 192.168.0.1 and now it changed to 192.168.15.1I don't think these IPs are correct cuz I have a mail server. Now I can't even PING or Telnet the mail server. It would give me a Time Out error. I go to the brower and enter »192.168.15.1 and it gives me an error webpage in RED.I can still go to router's config page by entering »192.168.0.1Can anyone explain me why?Thx. homecomputeraid
Was this an out of the box router, or had it been used somewhere before? Were there any configuration changes on the router that was in place?I'd consider resetting it [edit](the new router) to factory defaults and doing a ipconfig /renew on all the PC's after doing so if there were no configuration changes to the original router. [edit]If there were configuration changes to the original router, you should obtain those before resetting the new router to factory defaults if possible.Where is your mail server? If it's on your LAN, and there was a Virtual Server configured, you'll have to set that back up. It's covered on page 21 of your user manual available here assuming you have a Rev A, B, or C model router. What caused the router replacement? Did the one that was in place die? Did the one that was in place die?No, this is NOT a brand new router. I have used this router in the past and its setting is still intact which it has the port forwarding to the web server (port 80)After I hook this router to the cables and configured the router to forward port 110 and 25 for my mail server. The mail server is my web server. I have one box that has windows 2003 running (IIS 6) for the website and I installed one software called (MailEnable) on the same box. It act like a mail server..The reason for router replacement is cuz I couldn't access the configure page using http://192.168.0.1I have been using the previous router for the past 12 months and I have never had any problem with it.Things started to become weird after I reformatted the HD on my server, reinstall Windows 2003 and MailEnable. At the end I reset the router and it asked me for firmware Update when I enter http://192.168.0.1Therefore it caused the router replacement.I think my both router is the basic ones. homecomputeraid
I would check the DHCP Scope on the router to make sure it's handing out IP's in the proper range and make sure you have no other devices on your network giving out DHCP addresses. Did you enable DHCP on the server when you rebuilt it? If so, did you ensure that the settings on the server are correct? You will not want to have DHCP running on both the router and the server, so disable it on one or the other. The easiest way sounds like it would be to enable DHCP on the router and disable it on the server.
Discusman
DHCP? What is that? I don't think I've enable it on either of them unless it is enabled by default.what if I reset the router? Would that solve the problem? What is it mean when I see "Firmware Update Page" when I enter http://192.168.0.1?It brings me to that page after I reset the previous router to factory setting.I don't understand what is that mean. homecomputeraid
DHCP is Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It's how your computers obtain their IP Addresses when they boot up, unless you're doing static IP Address assignments, which doesn't seem to be the case from your description. Since the default addresses given out by the router are in the 192.168.0.x range, and you're getting IP's assigned from the 192.168.15.x range, it sounds like you have either changed a configuration somewhere, or there are 2 devices giving out DHCP addresses. If the latter is true, you'll get some IP's assigned in the 192.168.0.x range, and some from the 192.168.15.x range. To check the DHCP Scope on your router, go to the router login and click on the DHCP button on the left of the screen. What is the range of IP's listed there? What IP's do you want?Firmware upgrade sounds like your router is trying to do a firmware upgrade? Do you see any tabs or buttons you can click on to get to the router's home page?
Discusman
I still can't access the router's config page even I have already reset it several times.I get a 401 unauthorized error. All the IPs are look normal. Now I can't even host my website cuz I need to do port forwarding on the router and I couldn't..
homecomputeraid
401 unauthorized means you've put in a wrong username or password. Are you using the default user id and password for your router?
Discusman
yeah. I use "admin" for the username and leave blank for the password. I believe those are the default username and password. I have been using those for a long time. And it is not working now.I reset the router several times already. One more thing. I have a router which it has two telephone ports on it. This router is also connected to my network router DI-604. Could that router causing the problem here?My brother told me he had to lock down the IP on that router in order to make his telephone router working.I'm not sure what is he talking about exactly. His router is a linksys router with two telephone ports on it.
homecomputeraid
Two routers could definitely be causing a problem unless you have things configured correctly. It may very well be that you have two routers with the same IP Address, and thus two Default Gateways with the same IP Address. You may be inadvertently trying to manage the router with the telephone ports in it.Please try to find out the IP Address of the internal network on both routers. You'll want to set it up so there is only one possible way to get to the Internet. You can have two routers, but they must be in series, not parallel to each other. Why do you have two routers? Discusman
Why do I want to have two routers? because my brother wants to make phone calls through his router. But I dont know why..how can I check the IP for those two routers?I thought all routers have a default IP of 192.168.0.1, no?Here is the hiarchy of my network. 1. Internet Cloud 2. Time Warner Cable Modem 3. D-Link DI-604 3a. Linksys Telephone Port router. 3b. Switch to my roomLinksys router to my brother's room and connected to his desktopSwitch to my room connected to my web server and my desktop and laptop.Any problem with this setting? homecomputeraid
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you Discusman. I was not feeling well yesterday. The two routers have to be in series, not parallel, and the inside IP Addresses and DHCP Scopes have to be different. Are you able to get into and manage either switch at this point. You may have to isolate your D-Link (take the Telephone router offline temporarily) and hook directly into one of your D-Link's switch ports to see if you can get into it. Discusman
Ok, I will try to connect to the DI-604 alone.. I will update you on that. Thanks for your help.
homecomputeraid
[edit]As I typed all the following, something in the back of my mind kept asking if we really have to go through all of this. Why not eliminate the DI-604 and just use the Telephone router? Are you able to manage that and configure a port translation for your web server? It would be best to explore that possiblity further before embarking on the following, but if you want to just dive in, here's my proposal:Once you're able to get in to the DI-604, change the IP Address of the LAN, then assign a static IP Address to your laptop within that range, then change the DHCP Scope. I believe that once you change the IP Address of the LAN on the DI-604, you'll loose your connection to it until you change your PC's IP to one that's within the same range as the router's new IP. I'm going to recommend that you use the following scheme for your new LAN IP and DHCP Scope:LAN IP: 192.168.2.1 MASK: 255.255.255.0DHCP Starting IP: 192.168.2.100DHCP Ending IP: 192.168.2.199To change the router's LAN address, get into the management page, then click on LAN on the left. Type the new IP Address of 192.168.2.1 and you can leave the mask as it is if it's already 255.255.255.0, then click Apply. Don't be alarmed when you're unable to talk to the router after making this change. To change your IP to one that can communicate with your router on using its new IP, if you have Windows XP, click on Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections, Network Connections. Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties. The Local Area Connection Properties window will open:Click on TCP/IP then click on the Properties button. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window will open:Click the Use the Following IP Address radio button, then type an IP Address of 192.168.2.5, with a mask of 255.255.255.0, and a Default Gateway of 192.168.2.1. Click Ok, and Ok to exit the configuration screens, and try to open your router's management window again. You'll have to put its new IP Address of 192.168.2.1 in your browser's Address dialogue.Once you're in the router, click on DHCP on the left and put in a starting IP of 192.168.2.100, and an ending IP of 192.168.2.199. Click Apply. (The above router configuration information is on pages 18 and 19 of your DI-604 manual if you have a REV A, B, or C router). Get to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window as described above and re-enable DHCP by clicking the Obtain an IP Address Automatically radio button. Click Ok twice to save your changes. Your computer should now obtain its IP Address from your newly re-configured router.Get back to a management browser session on your router to make sure this was all completed successfully. After all of the above is complete and tested, I recommend configuring your network as follows:Internet --> Co-ax port on Cable Modem --> Ethernet port on Cable Modem --> WAN Port on DI-604 --> Switchport on DI-604 --> WAN Port on Linksys Telephone router --> Switchport on Linksys Telephone router --> your computer. (If the last switch to your room is necessary, please make sure you have a link light between it and an open switch port on the Telephone router (you'll need either a crossover cable, or a port designed to be used for uplink)). I'm kind of going port to port for you.Once everything's connected, I recommend powering it all off, then powering on from the Internet inward. Cable modem first, then DI-604, then Linksys. You'll want to make sure you get DNS Servers assigned when you get your DHCP Address. You can check this by going to a command prompt and typing IPCONFIG /ALL.If all of that's working, I'll have to try to figure out how to get the Internet traffic to your web server through two routers. Do you know what make and model the telephone router is?
Discusman
I just unpluged the telephone router from my network router and restarted everything. I still can't access the DI-604 config page.I also tried your suggestion that just use the telephone router for the network. Well it doesn't work.. I did this, I connected the telephone router to the cable modem and the there is no telephone signal on that router. Therefore my brother wouldn't be able to make any free phone calls anymore. This option is out of the question. Strangely enough I have been using these two routers for the network for the past 12 months. I dont understand why it stopped working after I formatted the HD in my server. Could configuration of my server cause this problem? Or the cable company blocked my access? I'm using earthlink cable modem.I think I may need to buy another internet line for this to work???
homecomputeraid
Are you able to get to the Internet if you hook directly to a switchport on the DI-604?Could configuration of my server cause this problem?I don't think so unless you configured DHCP on the server.Or the cable company blocked my access?I can't picture that changing just because you rebuilt your server. I think I may need to buy another internet line for this to work???I don't think you'll have to resort to that. What does your brother mean by locking down IP addresses? Discusman
I need to ask him about his linksys router more in detail. However as far as I know that the linksys router only works with my current DI-604 router. I have tried to connect the linksys to the cable modem box directly and tried to connect to my other router. It would just doesn't work, no telephone signal. He called the phone company and gave them the DI-604 router's IP and it worked. But I am not sure what exactly is going on.I have also tried another DI-604 router (older version one). And all the computer's IP would change to 192.168.15.102, 192.168.15.103... etc. The default gateway IP would changed to 192.168.15.1If I enter 192.168.15.1 in the browser and it would give me a page in red with some error message. If I enter 192.168.0.1 in the browser and it gets me to the router config page. But I couldn't do the port forwarding because my server IP changed to 192.168.15.103 and I think that IP is incorrect. I probably need to try one more thing which I should connect the DI-604 (older version one) without having the linksys phone router connected to the network. see what would happen..
