Windows lag

hi i was wondering if someone could help me out with a problem. When i play my games it seems that while i run (in first person shooters) through one section of the map its fine then i run through another section its like a delay (lag) then im able to run through the rest of the section it does the same for each section as i play the game. the game is 007 nightfire my system should run it no problem i have a amd socket 486 i think 1.4ghz on a msi km4m-v motherboard and that has a nvidia 6600gt hooked up to it along with a sata hdd oh and i have 768mb of memory the cd rom drive reads at 48x. The minimum requirements for the game are windows xp/2000 500mhz cpu 128mb of ram 8x cd rom 32mb video space on hard drive and sound card. I appreciate and thank you for the help in advance if you can help me on this problem i've tried setting the process priority higher than the rest and tried turning down the settings still have the same problem i dont know what else to do can anyone suggest something?

Are you running this from CD or hard drive?

Either way, it may help to defragment the hard drive(s) so that Windows doesn't have to search so hard for the next section.

(Note I know nothing about gaming, my suggestions are based on what I would do in other areas of computing.)

ok ill try that out and im running them on both ones a cd ones on the hdd, but i'll try to defragment my hard drive thanks for the tip oh and how many times should i defrag? and i have the games on seperate partitions does that help out any

Ensure you defrag the "C" drive as well as the partitions with the games on. Sometimes, unless you tell it otherwise, only the "C" drive will be defragged.

As to how often, I honestly don't know. If it works at all, then I suggest that you defrag again when you notice a deterioration in performance of the game.
