Peter F Posted March 13, 2006 Report Share Posted March 13, 2006 I want to migrate my old hard drive (C:) to a newer box. Lots of application programs/date etc are already installed. It will become the DRIVE D: in a new system in which an empty new Drive C: will be the home of Windows. I want to continue access to all of this applications software. Some of it is years old with original disks who knows where. Lots of it patched with special mods....ie impossible to replicate. I complete reinstall will never be 100% successful and will takes zillions of hoursQ: Is there some way of altering the registry so that everything just points to my new Drive D: instead of Drive C: so that I can just continue to run my exisiting applications without the need for a re-install?HM Queen Elizabeth is in Sydney to open the 2006 Commmonwealth Games. -pops- Posted March 13, 2006 Report Share Posted March 13, 2006 Which operating systems are involved here?Windows XP has the "Files & Settings Transfer Wizard" which will help you transfer all programs and files to a new computer.Look in Help & Support on your computer for details. It's quite easy to do.If you want just to transfer everything to a new drive whilst keeping everything else the same than you can clone the old drive to the new one with either Acronis or Ghost. Peter F Posted March 13, 2006 Author Report Share Posted March 13, 2006 Thank you.Old system is 98SE and new is 2000 SP4.Primary reason for the upgrade is the prospect of relief from years of system crashes/conflicts/lost clusters/freezes. Hence I am VERY nervous about cloning via Ghost or similar....ie I don't want to do all that work and risk reproducing the problem on a new drive???Does W2K have a transfer Wizard or some functional work around?
