Control Panel Display Problems

Hi, I'm having trouble on my laptop getting into Control Panel -> Display. I'm running Windows XP SP2, on a Dell D400. Whenever I right click and go to properties or go to control panel -> display, my computer will think for a bit, but do nothing. I can't get into the screen to change my screensaver or power save mode. Does anybody know what is going on or how to fix it, preferably without reformating. If there is no other way, is there a way to change the screensaver/power save mode, without going into this screen, like maybe in regedit or editing some other files. I've tried running virus scans and spybot but neither of them have detected anything wrong. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello, and welcome to the Windows Forum!

The first thing I would try in your situation is to run the system file checker. Start -> Run, and type

sfc /scannow

This will check for, and replace any missing or damaged system files. You will need your XP CD-ROM to run the system file checker.

Let us know how it goes.

SFC sounds like a good first step.

If it doesn't work, you could always try using System Restore (you probably already know this).

System Restore has been invaluable for me in the past, and I hope it is for you in this scenario.

Boot into Safe Mode before performing the restore just to be safe...
