Upgrade to a Bigger Hard Drive

I'd like to move to a larger hard drive. What is the best way to copy my current drive image and get it to boot on the new drive? I tried Norton Ghost, my buddy had a copy, but it didn't go well. Making the image went fine enough, but when I unconnected the old drive and moved the new drive to be the master things went bad. It hung at the login screen to windows. It never showed my login name. I'm not sure what version of Ghost it was.

I have a Knoppix Linux CD lying around here somewhere. Would that be able to do the trick? Can you just copy all the files over or is there more to it than that?

OK, I have to admit that I have never done anything like this. But if I were in this situation, I would probably try to boot in safe mode the very first time.

Have you formatted / partitioned your new drive ?

Try this it has worked OK for me several times:-

Norton Ghost version 2003 or later.

Add your new HD drive to your system as master, so that the original is C: ( and any partitions) and the new drive as slave and follows say D: or the next one after your partitions of your master.

Start ghost and select the Advanced then Clone follow the instructions to clone your system from C: to D:

when completed it will reboot on the original HDD. restart ghost and select Advanced then Integrity to check the clone worked correctly. if OK then remove your original HDD or change it to Slave and change your new HDD to master. it should then boot up on your new drive correctly.
