I have an employee who when opens word up, it defaults to a previous file she has opened instead of creating a new document. When she clicks on "NEW" it creates a duplicate file with a 1,2,3,or 4 and so on. Why is word cashing this document and what can I do to fix it. More than anything, its anoying.

When you click "New Document" in Microsoft Word (any version), it loads a document based on the default template: Normal.dot.

By clicking New Document, Microsoft Office loads this Normal.dot file which is a blank template.

In Windows XP, this file is located in: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

It is likely the user has saved his/her document overtop of this Normal.dot file.

In order to get a blank document back, you must overwrite this file with a blank document. Make sure you delete all formatting, text and font specifications before replacing the Normal.dot file.

Create a new document. Delete all text, formatting and font selections. Go to, File > Save as. Set the file type as "Document Template (*.doc)". Navigate to the folder I specified above (should be done automatically when you select .dot) and save it as normal.dot

However, I did have to add the following steps for whatever reason:

Save the blank doc to desktop.

Close word completly.

Delete old Normal.doc file

Drag from desktop "new" templete to folder.

BOOM it worked!

I just cant figure out how she modded that file in the first place.... :blink: :huh: :blink:
