That stupid thing on my taskbar.

Recommended Posts

:( Ok so can any body tell me what this box is popping up on my taskbar?

It's a normal looking box like what you might expect to see when you have a program running, you what i mean, you can minimize the application to that box on the taskbar.

Anyway, this thing with nothing in it ( no words or names ) other than a microsoft flag simbol, looks like a small windows update icon . It keeps poping up every 15 to 20 minutes or so, now it wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the fact that i get kicked out of my games that i'm playing . What i mean kicked is i'm playing a game, really getting in to it, and then all of a sudden the game gets minimized down to the taskbar. Then after everything settles down i move the cursor to that spot down there , left click, and only to find out that my car has crashed or my character has had his ass handed to him in a hand basket or what ever.

I believe this to be something ( an application ) that is set to a very over active setting and not anything viral/spyware/adware, Ive allready checked for trash apps ( like AOL Dialer ) in my system, registry errors, and of the kind.

Anybody have any idea's??, Ask me some questions and i'll try to answer them..

Maybe you ought to post a picture.

if you dont know how

hit the "Print Screen " when it pops up and paste it in a image editor like paint

doesnt it have any text on it

Well, when it pops up it happens so fast that i can't even get my mouse's cursor down to it to right click on it and find out it's properties. :censored: So i don't think i would be able to post a picture of it.

Just try to picture it in your mind, a raised box ( like when you have launched/minimized something )down on the taskbar with nothing in it other than a windows flag on the upper left hand side!, what is it, and how can i make it go away????

dosen't it have any text on it?

No, it sure don't, just that flag

Maybe if someone were to ask me a series of questions i would answer them the best i can, like this

#1-question

#2-question

#3-question

And so on. ;)

  1. Do you have anti-virus software installed?
  2. Do you have anti-spyware installed?
  3. Do you have a firewall installed?

If the answers are yes, are they up-to-date, and do you run regular scans for malware?

Answers

#1- Yes, Avast 4 Home ( Updated everyday ) Scans run on regular basis

#2- Yes, Spybot search and destroy, and Spyware Killer ( Updated weekly ) Scans run regularly

#3- Yes, Sygate Personal Firewall, setup correctly, Firewall vulnarabilty tests performed monthly on Sygate website.

The only thing that the firewall test could determine is that ,

1- I am in fact running Windows , but was unable to tell me what version ( 98se, 2000, xp, etc )

2- Was able to determine what browser i am using, Firefox v 1.5.1 .

3- Was not able to determine my computers name or password.

4- I have no open ports.!!!!!!

So i don't think it's viral, any ideas???

There is a rouge anti-spyware program that behaves in exactly the way you describe. It is know as Spy-Axe. You should post a hijackthis log to be sure.
