Someone has asked me about site hosting and bandwidth........ I haven't the foggiest so I am passing the question on.....hope you don't mind.

Web hosting companies offer different packages with degrees of bandwidth, after which there is an excessive bandwidth charge. Can you offer guidance on how much bandwidth I could expect to use. One site I intend to post is for a local shop and the other for a club. I intend to charge for managing the sites and would prefer not to in care extra charges.

Thanks in advance. :)

Your enquirer could use a free site for those sort of clients. www.netfirms.com offer sites for ziltch. There's an acceptable netfirms banner ad. as their part in the deal. I've got three sites with them under my first, middle and Sirnames. :)

Try here for info about free ones.

And here

And 1&1 are very good but not free.

The bandwidth used depends on the success of the websites. Web hosting companies will stipulate the bandwidth quota - your friend could perhaps reach an agreement with his clients that they will pay for any extra charges if bandwidth is exceeded - after all, the clients want the sites to be successful.

Windows Forum is hosted with One and One.

Currently using the £16.99 per month plan with a massive 40 GB of bandwidth. I think i am using in the region of 5-6 at the moment. However the bulk of the bandwidth usage is from the images used to create the forum when it is loaded. This will be reduced next week witht the next version, so hopefully it will go down to 4-5 GB.

I think One and One charge an additional 0.005 pence per MB after you exceed your allowence, this is by far the best i have seen around.

Not much - In the beginning you'll get naff all people visiting the site. Then as it become more known, word gets around. Visitors goes up more b/w being used.

The question is go for cheap now or go for £££ later when it really needs it. Go cheap and spend the the left over money for advertising - people gotta know the site is there!

Ummm...has to be free hosting then?

OH and some hosts actually own the domain name, so check that in case you want to change host etc.
