windows 2000 pro administrator problem

Recommended Posts

can anyone help me?

i'm running windows 2000 pro and i was working on establishing a wireless network at home.

in the process, under the computer managment tab i deleted the user that was the administrator for this machine by accident.

previously i had it set where during start-up it just skipped the password screen and logged on as the administarator.

now i can't log on as the adminitrator because it asks for a password and to my knowledge i've never had to enter one (can this be true?). i can access the machine only as a user that i created during the home network set-up which is not giving me access to my important school files!

is there anything at all i can do to gain access to my files without removing the hard drive?

any info would be greatly appreciated i'm desperate

Hello, and welcome to the Windows Forum!

To the best of my knowledge, every Windows 2K and XP installation by default creates an 'Administrator' account, and prompts for a password during the installation. Yes, blank passwords are allowed.

I don't know if Windows user names are case sensitive, but when logging in to the 'Administrator' account, I always have the initial 'A' upper-case. Can you try that, with a null password?

thanks for responding,

i figured it out.

i logged on as a user and was able to give the user administrative privelages and then i gained access to those files which i hadn't been able to get to.

i'll burn them and then do a fresh install.

in the future is it recommended to create a user and an administrator even though it's my personal machine?

thanks again

You entered that in the default admin account, which you get to by pressing control alt delet twice at the logon screen. That will give you the old login box. Then type "administrator" and hit enter. That is the easiest way. Remember this because not giving it a password which is default for xp you will be leaving a security hole open.
