Boa Constrictor Posted June 1, 2006 Report Share Posted June 1, 2006 My windows is broken - even in secure mode it only lasts about a minute before it shuts down. So I cannot move the files to another partition/HD. Since I cannot create an extra partition on C in install mode, I thought to simply install a second version alongside the other one on C (I accidentally did that before some time ago).Can anyone tell me, if the folders and files will remain intact - I don't remember. I have now renamed "My Documents" of the respective user, in case "My Documents" would be recreated by the new /second version.sorry, I'm quite a layman... Richard Cranney Posted June 1, 2006 Report Share Posted June 1, 2006 Hi there, you can install another copy of windows on the same harddrive. If you put the cd in and go through the normal windows install, rather than asking you to format the harddrive, you can choose "leave drive contents" and install to another directory, like C:\WindowsXP instead of windows.Then when the install is done, you will have an option which windows you want to load, like a prompt, use the arrow keys to choose (the new one is normally at the bottom of the 2) and press enter.The windows should now load and you can access all your files. I'm trying again, but I'm not too cofident.Can I install windows on another partition just as well, without losing all the data there? If you have then i cant see there being a problem, i've never tried it on another partition, just on the same one which had no problems for me.What problem did you get? Boa Constrictor Posted June 1, 2006 Author Report Share Posted June 1, 2006 Yes, I have a 120 GB HD partitioned into a small C for windows and progs plus D for data and a 160 GB HD. Everything has been used for 2 years. There is not too much data on C, still I don't want to lose it.During preparation for the new install it started to check the HDs, then loaded the regular Windows, which then of course shut down again. rong Posted June 1, 2006 Report Share Posted June 1, 2006 I'm not an expert, but if you can get a second Hard drive install it on that then run your present one as a slave. I don't remember if it will work as I keep all my saves on a separate partition. You may have to use a different drive letter on the new install. Boa Constrictor Posted June 1, 2006 Author Report Share Posted June 1, 2006 o.k., I guess I'm giving in for today :( , I'm repeatedly getting messages of unable to copy file...this again may be due to me using a backup copy *hopes*- even though I've installed OS with this one before successfully. Boa Constrictor Posted July 4, 2006 Author Report Share Posted July 4, 2006 I never came back to present the solution: It wasn't me, it wasn't the software - the new RAM was broken (so in the end buying it at a sale price cost me more, than buying it at a regular price, because, even though they of course exchanged it for free, I had to pay the checking fee.
