Inserting CDROM Problems

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have problems with inserting a CD/DVD into either of my DVD/CRW/ DVD/RW drives as the pc restarts! I can then access the cd/dvd after restart but this is obviously a bit of a bind! It doesn't appear to happen when I put a blank cd or dvd into either drive! They are on a seperate eide channel from the Hard Drive and the Master/Slave jumpers have been set correctly. Fimware is up-to-date and it's got me flummoxed! Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Cheers

PS running Windows XP Professional with all updates!

Has the machine always been like this or it it a recent occurrence?

Have you been looking inside the machine recently or made any internal alterations?

Is the IDE cable inserted the correct way round i.e. the end that should be in the motherboard is actually in the motherboard?

Have you tried the jumpers at the CS (cable select) configuration rather than Master/Slave?

Does anything else behave oddly?

Well basically, it's since I fitted the new/extra drive........I've ignored it as I've had other problems with my Muvo mp3 player which I've hopefully sorted by fitting a USB Hub and a new 580 Watt PSU! I wasn't aware there was a correct/incorrect way to attach the eide cable........how do I identify the correct way?

cheers

Cable direction used to be by colour coding but that seems to be irrelevant now as I seen cables with all connectors the same colour so, you have a connector at each end and another which is off centre, OK?

The connector which is furthest away from the "off-centre" one goes to the mother board the other end goes to the Master device if you're using the Master/Slave configuration and the middle one goes to the other device. If there is only one device connected, this goes to the end connector and must be set at Master or Cable select.

Hope you follow that :)

Sorry it's taken so long to respond but I've been on holiday followed by 12 hr shifts*6 soooooooo.......

here goes! I've actually changed the eide cable for one of those fancy Akasa rounded ones and have made sure there was no mistake as to connection. I had to in stall Paperport 10.3 today and the sodding thing wouldn't be read from either DVD/CDr device. On initially putting in the cd the pc would hold it's breath before deciding to restart. When the PC had re-booted, using explorer, I managed to to start the setup only to get a message sayin "Error applying transforms. System cannot read from chosen device (or something akin to that)"! I've inserted a music cd into the drive and that plays alright, albeit not on autorun.

However, I have just noticed that although I have set the Benq Drive as master and the Aopen as slave, the pc still sees the Aopen as drive "D" and the Benq as drive "E". Should this be the case? What's going on?

Help!!!

Have you checked your bios settings? If your drives are reading wrong sometimes this can be why. The drives should probably be set to autodetect their settings. They should be listed as normal drives not large or anything. LBA should be on and the correct sizes for your drives should be their. Hope this helps...post back if it don't :D

OK.........this is where I am........ I have Uninstalled the AOpen Drive which was the D Drive, expecting that the Benq would take on that letter on restart as it was the E drive! However, upon restart, I find that the status quo remains unchanged as it were, and that the Aopen drive is still there as the D drive. I'm trying to change them because I've set the Benq as my Secondary Eide Master and the AOpen as the secondary Eide slave and was hoping that this would fix the conflicts which are causing the PC to restart when I insert a proprietry cd in?? It seems to cope quite well with those cds I've burnt myself??***?

The LBA is set to on.

So what?????!!!

confused

Okaaaaay!!! I've removed the AOpen Drive from system and removed the drivers for same and installed a brand new Audigy Platinum card and breakout box in the 5.25 inch bay. I then tried to install the drivers etc from the installation Disk and the PC crashed and restarted. I then managed to install the software using Windows explorer and using the .exe file. What is going on here? Can anyone shed some light on the subject before I take the proverbial blunt instrument to my PC!!!

Help!
