Windows Won't Start! Need Help!

Recommended Posts

First of all, i'm a computer noob, so forgive me if i sound stupid. Anyways, my PC at home, which runs on Windows XP with SP2, will not boot up. After i turn on the computer, it goes to the blue login screen. I enter my password, and then after that, it goes to my desktop, but all i can see is the background. Sometimes, i can enter my password, and then as it says applying personal settings, i hit ctrl-alt-delete, and i can end the "explorer" proccess, and and then restart the "explorer" proccess and my PC will work. Please Help me!! i'm going insane over this!

Hello, and welcome to the Windows Forum!

From your description it appears as if Windows is not loading completely. This could have a number of causes, and it may take some time to diagnose this.

First question: can you open the Task Manager with Ctrl-Alt-Del ?

Next: can you boot into Safe Mode ? (Press F8 shortly after you start the computer, while the screen is still black. It could also be F2 on some computers.)

You idea is not bad, I would do the same and have dozens of times for many different things. The one thing I noticed though, is it doesn't seem like you are using your task manager to start explore.exe back up. To do that in your task manager, under the applications tab, go to new task and type in explorer, that should restart it. Not really a solution but I just wanted to make sure you knew about that. Heres some things to try...

When explorer doesn't load press ctrl+alt+del, go to new task and enter %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe. That will bring up the system restore. Just pick a date and restore.

Does this happen when you try to login to every account? What about in safe mode. And is there anything happening in your event viewer if you can get to it?

Good luck...Hope this helps...and post back... :D

I don't understand why your doing that..! CTRL+ALT+DEL and ending explorer.exe..

You don't have to do that for one thing , #2 If explorer is crashing all the time then you've problably got more serious problems, Like some viral infection..

What happens after explorer screws up and you just simpily restart windows ..?? That usually solves all of my problems..and it really suprises me at times at how well it works..

Please Help me!! i'm going insane over this!

I know how you feel man , i've been there and done that , trust me.. ;)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe. That will bring up the system restore. Just pick a date and restore.

"I knew there was something like that already built into windows", "i just knew it", I just didn't know how to do it.

Cozofdeath you rock..!!
