sporadic different stop errors (0x0..7 + 0x..8 + 0x0..fc + IRQL Not Le

Okay, my machine ran fine for about 1 year and it NEVER crashed into a BSOD. It ran smooth for 2-7 days without rebooting and I could play hardware intensive games like half life 2, battlefield 2 without any problems.

Now I installed a new SATA drive a few weeks ago (Samsung 250GB) since one of my 2 ide hdds died. I reinstalled Windows XP SP2 and installed all new drivers and Updates.

Everything runs fine so far, no significant errors in the eventlog, no smart errors, nothing suspiscious. All temps are okay. Not overclocked.

But since that day I regularly get a BSOD: It happens mostly after a longer on time like 12-36 hours. But sometimes it happens right after 1-5 minutes.

The first 5-10 times it was the 0x00000007 error without any mentioned source.

Now that error has not occured in a while, but I had different 0x0000008e errors: Up till now a different one every time: hidclass.sys or win32k.sys or wanarp.sys

Again they happened usually after about 16 hours of on time. Then a few hours later i got an IRQL not less Error. Then i deactivated the windows firewall and everything was fine for a few days but yesterday I get an 0x000000fc error just after turing it on and a 0x0..7 error few hours later.

I ran prime95 for hours without an error and I ran memtest for severals passses (2,5 hours) without an error.

I reinstalled Windows 2 times. One time even from another source cd from a friend of mine. I tried installing only the needed programs and drivers, but the errors occur regardless of that. I dont use beta drivers and all are whql tested.

Normally I am quite computer savvy, but I cannot solve this problem.

Of course I googled for hours, I read most stuff on "that Stop website", I read the support stuff from microsoft and as I mentioned before I installed all updates. I really dont know what I could try any more.

I dont know what infos I should dump here and I dont want to post 80 pages of everything, so I will just paste the basic infos. Please request all infos You might need additionally!

Since the problems started after the SATA install, some additional infos regarding the HDD:

I am using the Microsoft sata drivers right now and not the nvidia drivers, but when I tried the nvidia drivers the same error (0x00007) occured. So at least the sata driver dont seem to be the problem.

The HDD is a Samsung SpinPoint P120 250GB SP2504C and it is connected to the nvidia SATA controller on the mainboard.

Have you tried setting your 1.5G jumper on the drive? Have you upgraded your firmware if possible. Does your motherboard identify the correct size of the drive and have it set the LBA mode? If possible I would always use the drivers that came with the hardware. Also does this happen when running a resource intensive game or virus scanner? If your sata cable is unshielded make sure it isn't near/bent/wrapped around anything. If you can, upgrade your bios also. Just some ideas. Post back on how you make out.

Thanks for the help guys! The hint with the unshielded sata cable (or maybe a defective cable?) could be a good idea. I will switch cables to try it out. A unshielded cable would at least explain the sporadic and different errors. I got a new one when I came home (0x0..50 sth. ntfs.sys). The problem is that the pc like the days before sometimes runs hours or even days without an error and then - bang yet a new one... So its difficult to find the problem or to see if sth helps. I will also check the other suggestions (1.5g etc.) and will report back as soon as I have new infos. Thanks for You help so far. CU

Okay, 3 days ago I switched the SATA cable with another one I got together with my MoBo. Now the sporadic errors during nonGaming i.e. surfing, downloading, winamp, videos, idle time seem to have gone, but I cant be sure because like I said, the errors happen very randomly and I had 2-4 eror free runtime days before.

Besides, I still cannot play games like BF2 or FEAR anymore. I can play Sin Episodes and Half Life 2 Episodic for 2 hours though. But BF2 and FEAR run into random BSOD (irql not less..) after 1-5 minutes.

I can however run 3dmark06 for 40 Minutes (didnt test it any longer yet) without any problems (benchmark without sound and demo with sound).

Tomorrow I will try deactivating the new SATA drive and reinstall windows on the old IDE to see if its a problem with the HDD/controller. After all the probs started after installing the new SATA drive.

However I can run other HHD intensive tasks like 50 minutes virusscan, defragmentation, extracting huge archives withoug problems.

Its really very confusing... I had (and mostly solved) 1000 problems with PCs from me and my friends before, but this is really a hard one...

Everything appears like a hardware error (ram or vga) but why can I play other games or 3dmarl06 then? And why do neither prime nor memtes show any errors after 2 hours...?

I think I solved my problems:

a) The new SATA cable fixed the sporadic errors. Thanks for the hint again cozofdeath !

b) To avoid the instant errors during gaming I had to reduce my memory speed from 500/250 to 400/200. Not sure why that is. Mabye the ram is defective, but not completely... if that makes any sense? Its an A-Data DDR500 so it should run with 500 - as it did for a year. However I am happy that I can game again without problems for hours so I am not in the mood to further investigate that right now. I didnt notice a big performance difference either. But if anyone has an idea what could be wrong with my ram, it would like to hear it.
