Alert sounds, IM sounds, event sounds, sounds in web browsers (including flash cartoons and YouTube movies), and the like won't play, but CDs, mp3s, etc. will. And when I go into "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the control panel, under the "sounds" tab, the "play" button is greyed out and won't let me preview sounds.My monitor also doesn't seem to want to go into sleep mode anymore, staying fully powered-up with the screen saver on.Every volume setting I can find is turned up and not muted; the one in the control panel and the sound card's own volume controls. I even tried uninstalling the card's drivers and reinstalling them; still nothing. (Running a SoundBlaster Audigy 2, btw.) I ran McAfee VirusScan and it turned up nothing. I installed LimeWire shortly before the problems started; I've since uninstalled it, which also did nothing to fix the problem.Any help that can be given would be greatly appreciated. -pops- Posted June 28, 2006 Report Share Posted June 28, 2006 Limewire (and all sorts of similar programs) can secretly install all sorts of things that you would be best not having. Seems like you've been invaded with one or more of these.Can you do a System Restore to before you installed Limewire or, better, do you have a backup of your system? I expect you are going to answer "no" to that last question.You could run a HiJackThis scan and post in the appropriate section of WF but, before you do that you could run a scan with superantispyware click this and/or ewido click this and see what they come up with. -pops- Posted June 29, 2006 Report Share Posted June 29, 2006 I always back up to a separate hard drive - installed as a second drive on the spare IDE connector, installed as a third IDE drive via an IDE PCI card or an external drive connected by USB.Hard drives are quite low cost now so, in the long run, this will be the cheapest option.Have a look at the Windows Forum advice on backups - found here. :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
