Windows 2000 Help

*laughs* Never thought I'd be writing in a Windows forum. I'm a long time Mac/Linux user who recently bought a little laptop off ebay. It came with a Windows 2000 Professional install CD which is a bootleg copy, I'm pretty sure of it. Anyways, until I can get a proper copy of my linux system for this laptop, (as it's an intel and my Linux disks are PPC) I figured I could try windows for awhile.

Problem is, I think when I reinstalled 2000 that I installed a SECOND COPY OF IT, rather than just a format and install. I have approx 1 GIG less of space available then I had before the install. Under C: drive, the folders I have are;

I think the top folder is a backup of the old system. Is it safe to remove?

Also, my other problem is that I keep getting POPUPS asking me to download a program to fix my registry. I KNOW this is spyware, but adaware is not picking it up when I scan for it. It asks me to go to different urls, registryfix or fixit. I think this adware comes with my PC BUS install drivers for my ethernet card and I'm not sure that I can remove it.

I'm using a D-Link PC Card that goes in the bus port, and the only way I can connect to the internet is through it.

Finally, I am wondering about installing anti-virus software. Being poor, which would you recommend? I have plans maybe to get XP, but I'm not sure it will fit well with my system hardware.

First, about the $WIN_NT$.~BT folder - what does it contain? Similar subfolders and items as the WINNT folder?

Then, about the pop-ups - definitely spyware. Can you go to http://www.ewido.net/ and run the free online scan?

I am sure there will be others around soon and advise you on a free anti-virus software.

Hey! I managed to deal with the issue of that folder, deleting it proved effective in freeing up space and not detrimental to my system. I downloaded Ad-Aware SE to deal with ads, and AGV for virus's so I have protection for the time being, though they probably aren't as secure as a good pay program, but you know, if anything tragic happens I have the install CD for Windows. :3

Still awed by how much space Windows and all my programs seem to be taking up, about two gigs. I'm so used to having this tiny OS in the background that takes up maybe 1 gig or less. Glad I have all the extra disk space now. XD

I have a -new- problem actually. Firefox misbehaves sometimes for Flash or java generated animations. Sometimes they will work, sometimes they wont. Sometimes Yahoo Mail won't login, I have to uninstall flash to do it. o.o Just downloaded it again, maybe I'll test to see if that problem fixed itself.

But with flash sometimes elements where you need to select something to play? No dice, like on this site http://www.potterpuppetpals.com the two signs are supposed to be clickable and I can't click them, I have to put the URL for the two flash animations in seperately. >:(
