Windows closes when I try to view jpegs

odd problem - whenever I open folders in my registry that contain jpegs, Windows closes in an instant. As it tries to display the jpegs as thumbnails or as a list, the registry closes and returns me to the desktop. Obviously, with this happening so quickly, I don't get any time to view the jpegs. My registry is quite normal, with folders and sub-folders, etc, with anything between a few and several dozen jpegs in certain folders. None of the jpegs are particularly huge or anything, just normal size. If I re-locate the offendiing folder(s) to elsewhere in the registry, I can sometimes then open the folders and view the jpegs for a while, but eventually the same problem begins again, with Windows closing as it is halfway through displaying the jpegs in the folder. Related problems - if I try to access the folders from with, say, Microsoft Word, as I'm trying to import one of the jpegs into a Word document, as soon as Word begind listing the jpegs in the folder, Word itself closes. It also happens when I have downloaded a jpeg via a peer-to-peer download, but it doesn't happen when I've saved a jpeg from the net using right click 'save picture as', Windows has no problem viewing the jpegs then! The jpegs I'm having trouble with were scanned images, imported into Photoshop and then saved as jpegs, but the jpegs' origin shouldn't make any difference should it? It's a very frustraing problem as I'm currently doing a project involving about 2000 jpegs, but can't access them due to the problem. Any suggestions are very gratefully received!! Thanks. Chris.

Hello, and welcome to the Windows Forum!

May I ask you for a few clarifications?

1) you mention the registry a couple of times; could it be that you mean Windows Explorer?

2) you write "Windows closes in an instant". Does it shut down, or power off, or BSOD (blue screen of death)? Or do you mean that Windows Explorer closes?

3) is that something new happening, or did that always happen before?

Hi Pat...and thanks for you reply.

1) yes, when I mean the registry, I mean Windows Explorer, the standard way of opening/navigating through folders, sub-folders, etc.

2) I mean that Windows Explorer simply closes, all open folders close, and I am returned to the desktop. Any other running applications (IE, Word, Photoshop, etc) stay running and aren't affected.

3) This was happening 3 or 4 months ago, and persisted for a month or two, but the problem then stopped. I remember installing Service Pack 2 around this time, though I'm not certain if this was instrumental in resolving the problem. The problem has just started again in the last few weeks.

When I open a folder that contains the jpegs, Windows opens the folder normally, and as it starts to display the jpegs as thumbnails/as a list/icons, etc, this process freezes, and after a few seconds, Windows Explorer closes. Like I explained, I can move the folder(s) to another location on my HDD, and for a while I can open/view/edit the jpegs normally. But after a short while (a matter of minutes or hours), the problem returns.

I've even tried moving the folders to my external HDD, which is just used for file storage. But when I opened the folders from there, the same problem persisted.

Many thanks for any help or advice you can offer. Chris.

I don't know if I get exactly what you mean, but I do know some jpegs can get malformed causing them not to be displayed and causing overflows like it seems your getting. Is it only files scanned or files used with Photoshop? Does it happen with jpegs off the internet or gifs, bmp, tiffs?? Also, is everything updated on your system, like virus scanner, hotfixes & servicepacks, spyware scanner, because there was atleast one nasty exploit for this file type in 2004?

Cozofdeath....thanks for your reply, much appreciated. At the moment, the jpegs that are causing the problem were all created with Photoshop. They were originally scans that I scanned myself, edited in Photoshop, then exported as jpegs. But the problem has also happened in the past with jpegs that were transferred from my digital stills camera. So I'm not sure the origin of the jpegs makes any difference.

The odd thing is that I have had the jpegs on my system for about a year now, and I have only just had trouble accessing them. Over the last year, I've been able to open the jpegs, edit them in Photoshop, etc, without any trouble.

At the moment, I have several thousand jpegs, gifs, bitmaps, etc saved from the internet via 'save picture as...', and I can access all of these images without any problem whatsoever.

Yes, my PC is always well updated with various virus, spyware and adware programs, and Service Pack 2 is installed. I use things like Spybot, Spyware Doctor, AVG and Zone Alarm, and run/update them practically every day.

Thanks again, anything you (or anyone else) can suggest is gratefully received! Chris.

You forgot the most important portion - the Description. You should be able to copy it from the event log, then paste it into a quote here.

It's not sure that it actually contains any helpful information, but we need to see it in order to determine if it contains a clue to the error origin.

Sorry Pat, I didn't realise you needed me to do that.....after double-clicking on the error I listed in my last post, I was able to see the description in a pop-up window, but it wouldn't allow me to copy. So here is a transcription of what it said...

faulting application drwtsn32.exe, version 5.1.2600.0, faulting module dbghelp.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x0001295d

I hope this is what you meant and that it might mean something. Thanks Pat. Chris

When you open the event viewer you get a pop-up window like this

post-1524-1153467098_thumb.gif

The description in the lower part can be selected and copied, as I just did, and now paste here

The VB Application identified by the event source logged this Application DriverDetective: Thread ID: 3264 ,Logged: Exception description: An error occured in the transmission of your computers information. Please retry again.

Exception function: Main::Inet1_StateChanged(Args:11)

Exception OS: 5.1.2600

Addition Information:

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

It is possible that there is some useful information in there, but it is also possible that there won't.
