Rebel=UK=
My mate had a 250gig Sata harddrive and his pc would crash (bluescreen) after a clicking noise. So i said he needed a new harddrive so i got him to buy a new one, and i fitted it. I have the old one i was just wondering if i should bin it r try fixing it. Has anyone got any diagnostics software for this? Its a maxtor dimondmax 9 , ive checked to see if its still under warrenty but its just ran out 3 weeks ago and i cant see any software on the maxtor site that will work
dagwoood
Hi Rebel=UK= :) . You could try Powermax. It's a utility that runs either from floppy or CD, depending on which version you download. I know it says it's for ATA drives, but if you scroll down it says, "It is recommended to run PowerMax on all Maxtor SATA/ATA hard drives prior to warranty replacement", so it's obviously safe to use on SATA drives.HTH, dagwoood. cozofdeath
Yeah you definetly need a diagnostic program. It sucks but almost always a clicking noise with frequent bsods means a bad drive. A diagnostic program will prove that though. I was looking up stuff about hard drives a while back and this question was posted in many forums. It usually ended in the person buying a new one. If the clicking happens when the drive spins up, that can be ok. I've heard the noise is one of these, heads hitting platter, heads reading off the disc or heads rescanning bad sectors. I don't know if any of them are actually true. There still may be hope though. Post back how that diagnostic program made out.
