dub
Hello,Recently i formatted my HDD with windows xp home sp2. the install went fine. my DVR problem began (i think?) when i started installing the bundled drivers that came shipped with my motherboard. when i attempted to load another driver disk into the drive, i noticed that the CD was not being read. i then tried another CD/DVD/CD/DVD and yet nothing would load. the wierd part is that my DVR drive is recognised as a working device in device manager and it is also recognised in win explorer. even when i click on the drive in win explorer (with a CD loaded in the drive), i am not able to view any files and yet it does not tell me that there is no disc in the drive.so after a few days of scratching my head i thought reinstalling windows would be the final solution, but obviously i couldnt do that either. i have even tried installing new firmware for the drive (no confirmation of the firmware being applied successfully/unsuccessfully).Before this current reformat, the DVR drive was working fine. it was reading CD's and DVD's and playing back perfectly. can anyone help? i am out of ideas, also totally confused... i realise i could try an external device, but this is not a feasible option at the moment for me.16XDVD+R/-R PIONEER DVR-111DAMD ATHLON64 3500+ BOX SOCKET AM2 WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR SE/250GB/7200RPM/SATAIIGIGABYTE GA-M55PLUS-S3G AM2 nVIDIACorsair VS1GB667D2 1GB PC-5300 DDR2 RAM
-pops-
My first thoughts are that there may be a physical fault with the drive (damage/laser out of alignment etc.)Is it possible for you to test the device in another machine or test another device in your machine? dub
my current thoughts are that the laser is out of alignment as when the discs are trying to be read, every 30 sec's or so there is a slight clunk noise. i was hoping no one would suggest this as it confuses the problem even more. i dont understand how the laser could be knocked if the whole tower has not moved and the sits on a desk. next step is to test in another box, so ill keep u informed... -pops-
Laser mountings are very delicate and it doesn't take much force to knock them out of alignment. It could be that a disk wasn't inserted into the tray quite correctly and, being at an angle to the laser mounting, knocked it out of true.If it is something like this, I'm afraid there isn't much you can do by way of a repair. A new drive shouldn't cost a lot - in the UK a DVD RW drive can cost as little as £20 (don't know what that is in Aus. dollars)
