crossmr Posted August 2, 2006 Report Share Posted August 2, 2006 I've been having intermittent DNS issues with my main PC all day, and I can't figure out why.I'll attempt to goto a website and though I try several times it will continually tell me it cannot resolve the host. Ping and tracert also fail. Yet if I attempt to browse to the same website on my laptop which is connected to the same router and has the same settings, it comes up instantly.I've reset the router and the modem, and I've restarted the machine.I ran wireshark (formally ethereal) and noticed some unusual SMB packets coming from another machine on my network and restarted that machine. After reboot the packets were gone. However I'm still getting intermittent DNS issues. It seems ot have the proper DNS info, and most websites work correctly, but I'm still getting this issue where websites working on one computer are not working on another.Any thoughts on troubleshooting this would be great. Nothing else unusual is showing up on Wireshark. Leaving it running for a bit while doing nothing is showing no unusual packets, and nothing looks out of place capturing while trying to request a website. It just seems that DNS is simply checking out for a bit.The computer was freshly formatted, last week but its been fully updated. crossmr Posted August 2, 2006 Author Report Share Posted August 2, 2006 I usually disable system restore, but I hadn't gotten around to it yet. I haven't tried a system restore yet. Before I do that I want to ensure that the problem hasn't corrected itself, which with Windows networking can certainly happen. So far this morning its been good, if I start to notice the issue I'll try restoring. A couple months ago one of the routers on my network was flooding the network with TCP Zerowindow packets about 20 every 10 seconds and was causing network issues, I was hoping it was something simple like that.
