Registry Editor Crashes

When I try to edit the permissions of the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT directory in the registry editor the program crashes. This only happens when editing that directory (not the other directories) and it happens even in safe mode. That directory does not have "administrators" or "system" permission, that is what I am trying to add. I need those permissions in order to install SolidWorks 2007 on my computer.

Anyone have any idea why editing permissions will cause regedit.exe to stop responding?

I am trying to add a group. The only group on there right now is "Everyone". I am trying to add "Administrators" and "system" since the other directories have those groups and since I found out (through google) that those groups not being on my permissions list is the cause of my installation problems. And of course, I am trying to give those groups that I add full access.

So after I add the name of the group and I press OK or Apply the program crashes on me and asks if I'd like to send an error report. This happens every time I add a group, no matter what I name it.

I am using Windows XP Pro SP2
