why_me143 Posted September 16, 2006 Report Share Posted September 16, 2006 My computer is getting really slow and is full of programs and files that I dont need I have tried deleting everything one by one but the computer is still so slow. I thought about rebooting it but I cant find the cd is there a way of ordering it or rebooting without the cd i cant find the windows xp cd either. If you have access to another copy of Windows of the same type as the one you have installed you should be able to use your current product key to re-install but be very careful to ensure that they are the same version.Have you defragmented your current setup? That should help in tidying up your hard drive.Also, getting rid of rubbish by using CCleaner click here will improve performance a lot. There is no reboot CD...You can't find the reboot CD or the XP install CD.... My computer is getting really slow and is full of programs and files that I dont needSo then "un-install" them , Don't just start deleting things , your really going to screw it up that way... I know what you mean by rebooting your PC and its quite a good term to use as it often is in movies. What we and other forums mean by rebooting is just a simple turn off and restart of the machine.If you have the product key, it may be stuck on the side, or rear of your tower unit then borrowing a disk from a friend and using your code is fine, but as pops says make sure yours is not a restore type of installation first. If you don't know how to tell then post back to this topic with as much info as you have regarding make/model of machine, any disk you have and we will soon put you on the right path to doing a fresh install of windows if this is what is needed. I wouldn't yet resort to such a drastic step, just because your system has slowed down. You can almost certainly clean up your system without a reinstall.First, make sure that your system is not infected with any malware. Run the online scan at http://www.ewido.net/ to see if you have any spyware on your system. Run a full scan with your antivirus software.And of course follow -pops- advice. Once you have done all that and your system is still slow, come back here - we have a lot more things that can be done to speed up a slowing system. The actual disk that the Windows version is downloaded from is immaterial provided it is the same type and version as the one previously installed.Even some pirate versions of WXP can be "legitimised" by the installation of a genuine product key obtained from Microsoft. The one intrinsic to Windows is not the best one available and a commercial program such as Diskeeper Lite click here will do the job better.
