media player trouble

I recently had a computer that a Windows system file got corrupted & Windows XP Pro had to be re-installed. I've got almost everything back up & running except for Media Player. When Windows re-installed, it installed Media Player 9 but music that had been downloaded would not play so I upgraded to the latest version which is 11. It still won't play so I rolled it back to version 9 & installed version 10 since that was what was on the computer when the music was downloaded. It still won't play. It says the licenses are missing but they were backed up. When I try to restore them, it says no licenses were found. I have combed microsoft's web site & tried every media fix I could find. Nothing works. Please help! Thanks so much.
