asrfel Posted October 5, 2006 Report Share Posted October 5, 2006 Hello,I have a computer that runs windows XP SP2 on a athlon64 with an Asus Motherboard. I want to backup this system. Meaning i want to clone windows on another hard disk, insert the hard disk in another computer and have the same computer.thing is i have done the cloning, but when the new computer boots it stops at the screen with Windows XP, not the one with the lines going from left to right, the next one.And i would have 2 questions1. Is it possible to do what i am thinking of, considering the fact that the hardware configs are different ?2. Is there a way to force windows to load its basic drivers and not try to load any of the drivers installed for graphics, sound and so on ? So that i may boot up ! You cannot have the same copy installed on two machines.If you do try that you will have the second one working for 30 day maximum before it has to be activated by Microsoft, at which time the system will be refused any further operation.There may be ways of doing what you want but it is not legal and Windows Forum is not the place to tell you about it.If you want to back up your system as it is at present then something like Acronis will do that for you. I will activate the second one too with a Widnows licence. I want to do the cloning because of the fact that i have several software isntalled during the last 2 years and i CANNOT configure those from scratch ! You can produce a clone of a hard drive by using something like Acronis.The problem with any disk clone is that all the components of the "new" computer must be the same (hardware and software) as the previous version otherwise Windows will recognise it as a different installation and fail to install - which is what you've found. It is possible that Windows tries to accommodate for the new hardware and loads the new drivers during start-up. But if the 2nd system is too different, this may simply not happen.What I would try if above does not work is to normally install a new Windows XP on the 2nd system, then use the File and Settings Transfer Wizard to migrate to the new system.
