tfga Posted October 5, 2006 Report Share Posted October 5, 2006 Programs keep freezing when I do certain things such as copy & paste (it seems to be anything thats system related). When it happens the program im using completely freezes for about 20 seconds (including title bar) but everything else runs fine - I can switch to another program. The CPU usage doesn't go up, the task manager shows idle and I dont have any firewalls or antivirus programs running.Some programs are worse than others - in Illustrator it will freeze every time I copy something and also if I open a file. Excel freezes the first time I make a cell bold, but not after that, it doesn't freeze on opening a new document. Print seems to freeze on all programs. In Word I can copy and paste some text fine and bold it fine but if I click the font drop-down it freezes. In Photoshop there's no freezing at all! not for copying, not for opening files, changing font, even printing doesn't freeze! IE and Firefox both freeze for printing, there are too many other programs to go through.This is driving me crazy, I just cant be bothered to reinstall Windows right now, but doing anything is a pain. Its started happening in the last few weeks, I cant think of anything that could have started it, i've tried killing as many processes as I can to home in on the problem but I cant figure i out.Im running Windows 2000, Pro, SP4. Can you check with Task Manager (Performance) how your physical memory and page file are doing? (Especially during these freeze periods). -pops- Posted October 6, 2006 Report Share Posted October 6, 2006 In addition to what Pat says, is there activity on whatever it is that is attached to the Ethernet connection (presumably a modem or router) when this freeze is happening?If yes, then there may be some program (malware?) loading/extracting information from your machine and it is prioritising over anything you want to do.I would do a thorough scan for virus and spyware. I loaded up Sygate Personal Firewal to check and it looks like the ntoskrnl.exe process is sending about 60 bytes out, I think it gets about 60 bytes back too but either way, when I completely block this process in Sygate the problem stops! This explains allot because I stopped using Sygate a few weeks ago because there was a firewall on my router and I figured it would just speed things up.Ok looks like I need to keep it, now atleast I can take a look at what its sending.
