Locked out of XP Home after virus removal

Hi People, Thanks for taking the time to read about my problem.

Heres whats happened.

1. Friend reports to me that her computer is very slow on the internet.

2. I prescribe the following: download avast antivirus then other stuff like spybot and kerio firewall.

3. Upon running avast, she finds loads I mean 100's of infections.a few trojans and a virus called vertob?

4. She puts em all in the chest.

5. Now when she boots up she gets a windows screen that shows her username already entered and then a space for her password.

6. Problem is she has never passworded her account.

7. you can still click logon though

8. it says windows is loading your settings (makes the windows sound)

9. immediatley after it says saving your settings (makes windows sound)

10. I say try safe mode

11.same problem.

i.e. cannot logon to account/windows even though she has never previously encountered this screen. i.e. no password on user/admin account.

Please help, I can't promise it'll improve your life but I'll give you a big E-thanks.

oh by the way it's an old laptop with windows xp home.not sure of brand.

Also, do not have original windows disc. Will be with her soon though.

Then you have a problem as you will have todo a full system recovery you require the disk as it will have all the drivers for Mobo and other hardware the only other way is togo to makers of your computer website and get the required drivers from them plus a new copy of WXP.

Have you tride system restore thats if you can get into safe mode

ALL DATA WILL BE LOST ON A FULL RECOVERY.

I would reccomend running norton systemworks off a boot disk. I've had a similar problem in the past and resolved it this way.

It sounds like removing the malware left you with a classic logon screen. It wouldn't be unusual if it did. Another thing you could try if you haven't is in the username box type Administrator and leave the password box blank then hit enter. If it works you can then change any profile/logon settings.

I will try both, although the norton route sounds promising.
