blank screen when windows loads up

Hi

I recently installed Windows xp SP2. the resolution was stuck on 640x480 (due to missing drivers i presume), and a friend of mine fiddled with the display settings, ie in Display Properties -> Settings (tab) -> Advanced

I'm not 100% sure what he changed, but after the change XP prompted to restart for changes to take effect. The problem now is as soon as XP gets past the loading screen on boot up, the monitor goes blank.

Can anyone please suggest a way to revert back to the original display settings, or sort out the problem by some other means? i've tried booting into safe mode, but the system freezes after mup.sys is loaded (a common problem i believe...)

Thanks in advance for any help
