net access - dhcp, dns, http not working

When setup to use dhcp and loaded with the correct dns and gateway used correctly by other pcs on the LAN this computer doesn't get an ip - so I configured with a dedicated IP. With this a dedicated ip it can ping other pcs on the lan by computer name or ip. It cannot access any thing on the internet with a browser with http - ie yahoo.com. It cannot access the local routers configuration page (192.168.0.1) but can ping it. It cannot ping yahoo.com by name but it can ping with the yahoo ip. I have compared 2 other pcs on the LAN to make sure all is configured the same and correctly (except dhcp). I've run some network support tools on it but can find nothing misconfigured.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If everything is configured the same as the rest, maybe try checking if the correct services (dhcp client, dns, client) are on? Especially the dns client. You probably already know but you can check by going to Start, Run and type services.msc. Hope it helps.

Thanks - the services are all running. I even did some compares with the another computer that worked and they are the same.

Is the dedicated ip address in the dhcp address pool? I would work on fixing the addressing problem first, that may be the cause. Can you post what you get when you run a ipconfig /all from a command prompt? Also can you get to google by click this http://72.14.207.99/?

Thanks for reply. The way I have configured tcp/ip now is to "obtain IP automatically", set the pref DNS and gateway to the router address (192.168.0.1) - also have the "alternate configuration" set to 192.168.0.45 which is in the address pool.

Tried browse to google using the ip - same results = "server not found".

BTW, I have also tested using a wired connection but the results are essentially the same.

Thanks - I did think of that and basically disabled all firewalls.

Your DHCP isn't working and you don't have a default gateway. Thats what it looks like to me. You can enable Automatic private ip addressing in the tcp/ip alternate configuration page. I would also enable DHCP and run WinsockFix. I would disable any firewall and then release and renew and see if you can get an ip. Deleting all temp/cache files and checking if you have any proxies also couldn't hurt. Even checking the event log might reveal something new.

After running the winsock fix program ( I had forgotten about it even though its been around a long time) were able to connect to the internet over the wired connection and sometimes the wireless. When I release/renew one either connection the ip will sometimes be from DHCP and sometimes be from the autoconfig. Not as solid as I would like but HUGE progress. Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't expect this thread is quite over yet as I'm not convinced how solid this is yet. In the meantime if you have more suggestions I'm listening.

I'm just about all out. You could try this as well. Have you tried disconnecting a machine to see if the bad computer one will pick up a solid address? Maybe turn down the dhcp lease time too?

After I cleaned up the caches and prefetch stuff everything started working as it should - both wired and wireless. I think the key here was the winsock fix program. Thanks for all your help.
