Random Power Off

Recommended Posts

Today ive just received my new 7900GTO and i installed it. All was looking fine, done a benchmark went fine, then i decided to play some Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter played it for about 30mins then all of a sudden the computer just flicked off not a restart just lost all power, i went to turn it back on it started up for 1 second then off again, i had to switch it off at the mains then it started up and i got something about a boot disk faliure , restarted again and it loaded into windows.

Does anyone know what could cause this sort of thing, im really annoyed i thought it had all went well and i was happy with it :(

Sudden power-off and inability to restart straightaway are indications of overheating - especially if it was working hard.

The boot disk failure may be caused by an error in the shutdown procedure.

Im not sure its a heat issue, as if it was the Grapics card overheating it would just throttle down and make the game jerky. Also this card is fitted with a quality cooler, infact its the same one as on the slightly better GTX model.

Im thinking maybe its a PSU issue (500W) it has the requierd power for the graphics card (25amps on the +12Volt Rail), BUT is a cheap one

When I read your original post, my first question was going to be what type/model of PSU have you got. The cheaper ones can be rated at 25amps but they normally only have one rail, whereas the more expensive ones have 2, and the quoted figures are peak figures and not sustainable.

What make is it Rebel=UK=?

Also, I don't know whether -pops- was referring to your CPU overheating, that would account for a shut down and take a while to restart. I'd check you CPU fan is working, or have you got any CPU monitoring s/w(SpeedFan)?

Oh, nice card by the way B) Couldn't stretch to a 8800 ;)

I was originally referring to the CPU overheating but it could easily be the overload or thermal cutout in the PSU.

25 A @ 12V is 300 Watts - that's before anything else is taken into account so, you could well be straining the PSU beyond its means.

Yeah i think it could be this cheapy PSU i think ill have to folk out somemore and get a decent one. This one looks good and is a good make, might pop up tomorrow and have a look in person.

The make of the card is MSI (is only 2 makers of this card the other is eVGA ), and no i could streach to a 8800...i whish i could :(

Rebel=UK=, I've seen quite a few posts over on the OcUK forum about Hiper PSU's failing after a few months of use. I was going to get one myself until I came across the bad feedback about them and that's why I paid the little extra and got a Tagan.

It might be an idea for you to have a look around and see if it's still a common problem or it's been sorted.

Ok, if it goes after a few months it'll be under warranty, but it's still a pain(and expensive, they're normally quite heavy)to have to return one and be without a PSU.

If it's a local shop then it's not a problem to replace. I don't mean to sound like "doom and gloom", a lot of people swear by them, but I thought it'd be something you should be aware of :)

As and aside, are COCC any good? I've never come across that store and their prices seem quite competitive.
