Proxy settings location for IE, Firefox, Opera browsers

Could someone clarify how WXP (and similar W32 systems) controls proxy settings. For example when programs specify that the program will take the Internet Explorer settings (where a proxy is specified in IE) where in practice are those settings held in WXP? Are they in the registry or some config file in the IE installation folder, or under the windows installation folder?

Also, if I use another browser instead of IE, say Firefox or Opera and set my proxy settings in Firefox, are these setting updating the SAME global proxy settings configuration location which is used by IE and will those programs which specify that they will use IE settings pick up the settings I set using Firefox?

Does anyone know how to change the settings of these proxy settings

programatically? If you have any such script please attach.

TIA
