mombasa
Yesterday, my laptop screen stopped working. The laptop itself was fine as if you connect a monitor it all works. I went home and tried fiddling about and in the process must have damaged it completely (the last thing i remember doing was uninstalling ALL the monitor (display) drivers. Then the computer would not start at all, or at the very best it would go to the windows start screen and them reboot again, and again, and again and so on. I have some REALLY important work files on the drive that i have to recover. My brother suggested that i install a new copy of windows (xp) on the same partition and should be able to access the old files from this copy of windows. So i did. But, no i still cannot access the files, or at least the ones i need. some files are there, all the program files, all the stuff in the inetpub folders etc, but noting in my documents or desktop (where the important folders are).Is there anyway of getting those files? ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Hello, and welcome to the Windows Forum!Try Examining the C:\Documents and Settings folder; there may be an original 'My Documents' folder that contains the files you need. Before reinstalling Windows, did you try to boot into Safe Mode, or Last Known Good Configuration? This is usually the best way to restore your system. Also, if you have important files and documents on a computer, make sure that you always have a full backup of your system, or at least of the folders that are important to you. mombasa
Thanks for that, but i've fixed the computer...well, minus the screen problem. I follwed some advice on restoring windows using the recovery console and copying/deleting systems files and so forth. Quite lengthy, but worked like a treat in the end. Now, its just a matter of fixing the screen. And thats not so simple it seems. Got qouted £350 + labor, although the repair man thinks it's most likely an inverter problem, in which case he can't fix it cos he has not parts . Did some searching, but couldn't find any on ebay or else. Anyone know where i can get an inverter? The laptop is an Advent 7041 (apparently, also Mitac 8060).Thanks. -pops-
The big problem with laptop repairs is that some of the components such as the one you require are machine specific and obtainable only from the maker/supplier of the laptop - which most likely means PC World for this brand. Have you asked there?
